Unanswered: What to do before starting an rebuild engine?
What should i do before i fire it up? I can imagine that there should be some oil at some critical points, but how do i get it there? Rotate by hand? Is there anything more i have to take care of or have to pay attention for? Any tips to get a quick start? What would you do before starting your rebuild engine? I'm curious....

I have been told by reliable sources that in order to break in a new cam you should get the engine started and run it at about 2000 RPM for about 20 minutes without shutting down. In order to help the situation I used 3 Qts of 10W40 and 4 ounces of ZDDP additive that I got from Summit Racing. I also added 4 ounces of STP as I have had good luck with this in the past. I used an 18" long piece of 3/8" smooth rod and ground the end of it to look exactly like the end of the distributor shaft that drives the oil pump. Stick it down into the distributor hole after the oil is in the engine and spin it with a drill to build oil pressure without the engine running, you should be able to read oil pressure on the gauge as long as you turn the key to the on position but NOT to start. Be careful to hole the drill square to the distributor hole so that you don't damage the small bearing surface that the distributor shaft turns in. I have an electric fuel pump so I also turned it on with a jumper wire and built fuel pressure in my system before I ever turned the key. After running for about an hour I would change the oil and the filter at which point you can opt to leave out the STP when you refill. Make sure your coolant system does not allow the engine to overheat, I have an electric fan, if you don't you may want to have a fan handy to add air flow over the radiator. Also don't set the valves too tight, better slightly loose and then adjust later. Can't think of anything else but maybe you will get other replies.

to get it to start on the first few turns ( if it still has points ) you can time it static. Find #1 tdc or real close to it. use a multimeter or a continuity tester and rotate the distributor so that the points come open ( after their dwell ) right at #1 tdc. that is when the coil fires. It should start right up.
