Bolts holding the cam timing gear?

I am trying to figure out where I can get the right tool to remove the timing gear from the camshaft. The bolts look similar to the head bolts being a 12 point design. I have the right tool to remove the head but I don't have the smaller size that will fit the cam gear bolts. any ideas on where I can find the socket and the name of these things would be helpful.

Just remember you will need the long series ones to reach both the short head bolts (12mm size bit)and the cam bolts (8mm size bit) as they are a long way inside the head.

The set is Lisle pn# 60750. Any parts store will order them for you. I think KD sells them individually but I don't know the part#.

I got a set of "Serated Wrenches" from my local NAPA dealer; they come in 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm to do this kind of work along with head removal. You can also use a standard socket driver with them to help the removal process...

In your removal of these cam bolts, BE SURE to stick a rag, or some other "catching" device into the access hole just under the cam gear. If you don't, and then drop one of these little jewels, it goes ALL the way down and the retrieval process will not be a fun one! In short, you WILL have to remove the front engine cover, etal, in order to get it out...Just my 2 cents worth....

It's not that bad. You swear a little and wrap a coat hanger securely around a magnet retrieval type tool and go for it. Maybe I just got lucky, who knows but it worked once. I actually use a strong magnet to make sure it stays attached to the bit.

Well I ended up ordering a entire set of them from Mac tools. I hope they work out ok. I will be a pissed off sob if they won't reach. I didn't think about that until I had finished my order. It really at this point doesn't matter if I drop one chances are it will hit the ground or get stuck along the chain. I am tearing the whole engine down for rebuild.

I am sorry if my explanation was overkill on this procedure, however, I do know that having to chase one of these is a real booger!

BTW, That's a real nice set of sockets you bought OpelNewb and they should do the job nicely!

Thanks I figure they will be a nice compliment to all the other tools I have for Mac Tools. I have spent several years working in a shop. So I have lots of nice tool unfortunately I would have more but someone stole alot of them several years ago. I have spent some time rebuilding the collection.
