Question: 2.2 Specs needed for pistons

Need to know a few things about the 2.2 Specs. I know much of the 1.9 crosses, but I would like to see a sheet on actual measurements that would have been in a manual, like our 1.9 specs. I need stroke, I know bore, but things like deck height and such. I am going to get with my machinist in the morning for our measurments, but sure would like some additional specs for having custom pistons made. I plan on doing a .030 over piston on the factory 2.2 engine, if you need that info. My boss has a close friend at Diamond Pistons that I may get a deal from...and their pistons are sweet at that. So anyways they have a bunch of questions on a spec sheet I have to fill out concerning Rod length, compression height, piston to deck, cylinder bore length. I will be running the hydraulic Isky Combo cam with stock 2.2 valves and it does ask intake and exhaust depth with valve angle. Jeff, do you have a piston cheat sheet????? Anyone???

Base everything on the deck height of the block your going to use. The stock specs can get you into trouble when configuring for custom pistons.

I still need to know other variables, such as stroke and others, just need a spec sheet to follow by, not necessarily using it as my specs, just to relate to.
I wouldn't have a 1.9 rebuilt without it either, but it is easy to get its info from the manuals here in the states

I am 99% certain that the stroke is 77.5mm, the stock deck height is 208mm.

2.2CIH - 77.5mm stroke, piston compression height: 1.619" (41.15mm)
1.9CIH - 69.8mm stroke, piston compression height: 1.771" (45mm)
. . . same rods for both engines, valve angle is same as SBC (Small Block Chevy), 23°!

I'm building a 2.1 using a 1.9 long block, a 2.2 crank and standard bore 1.9 (93mm) piston/rod assemblies, piston tops shaved .142" (3.6mm) and valve reliefs flycut for I-45mm/E-37mm (2.2/2.0 stock) valves . . . I digress.

Hey Otto- This is Ernie Bello in Florida- If you need 2.2 pistons, I have at least one set with rods and all that I won't be using- I use the 2.2 cranks with race rods and pistons for my (almost) 2-liter Kadett C Vintage racer. I will make you "such a deal" if you are interested!? And you would have a real 2.2 motor. Also have a set of Sprint Weber Carbs without filters I would like to sell, if anyone is interested... What are the stock valve sizes for the 2.2 head for reference also?
Getting a little more out of you guys, what is the piston to deck height on that engine? I want to stick as close to a perfect even with the deck height. not over or under, but would like to know if there was a stock spec on that

Stock 2.2 valves are 45 mm (1.77") intake, 40 mm (1.57") exhaust.

One thing to keep in mind is that all the CIH engines have asymmetrical valve locations, even though the OEM pistons are useable as 'left or right' with symmetrical valve notches.

Deck height varies from engine to engine, just as with other displacement CIH's. But most fall within the range of .004" to .007" below deck. Reconditioning the rods will lower the piston relative to the top of the block, but of course decking the block will bring the piston closer to the top. However you really can't go wrong with zero deck height for any street build.

The 2.2L CIH motor was only used for a couple of years 1984-86 and some of them ended up in Vauxhall Carltons. Don't get the 'old' CIH design mixed up with the later SOHC 2.2L 'Gen II' motor as it is completely different.

2.2L CIH motor:

Block Deck height: 208mm (same as 1.9/2.0 - indeed 2.2 blocks have '2.0' on the side so may be the same block!)
Rod length: 128mm (same as 1.9/2.0L)
Stroke: 77.5mm (only the 2.2 has this stroke - unless one of the 6-cyl models had it?)
Bore size: 95mm
208 - 128 - 38.75 = 41.25 pin height for piston (1.624").

If you have a set of 2.4L rods with 134mm length they would give you better rod angularity but need a shorter pin height. [208 - 134 - 38.75 = 35.25).

That is 1.388" - have a look at oversize 305 Chevy piston blanks as they are close to this spec and may machine up to Opel size. 305 Chevy pistons have two pin heights 1.561" for stock rods and 1.261" for use with 6" rods and standard bore size is 3.736" (94.89mm)
