Answered: Engine problem, much coolant in oil

Hello,

I have a problem with the engine of my opel gt. This weekend I checked the oil level, and to my surprise the oil level was way to high (50% above max)!!!!

The thing was that about 2 liters (1/2 gallon) of coolant was heaped on the bottom of the sump. The oil was also mixed with the coolant (Sludge). The engine was recently fully revisited with new camshaft, cilinderhead, pistons, gaskets etc.

After disassabeling the engine head I made some pictures. Does anyone have an idea what could have gone wrong?

I have always re-torqued the head after a few miles as well. Since you stated that the motor was re-built, that may have been part of the problem. just thought I'd mention it.

There is a small rubber seal that goes in the large hole closest to the timing case. If you leave that out you can get a severe coolant leak.

I see red silicone around the hole where the small rubber seal Nathan is talking about is supposed to go. When installing a new head gasket you may want to check out the modification (info on this site) whereas two holes are cut in the gasket to allow for more even cooling of the #2 & #3 cylinders.

Thanks for the quick reply guys! The small rubber seal was in place, we just made sure it didn`t leak by putting a small amount of silicone around it.

Was this seal reused? You must NEVER reuse this seal. It seals by compression. If it is reused it will never reseal. It is made to squish into place and be replaced when the head is removed.

The seal was also renewed. I have a suspision that the head may not be bolted firm enough. Could that be?

If you did not tork the head to the right amount in the right order you could have the leak that caused your failure. Have the head checked for warpage before you re-build.

My oil level also increased due to coolent..

But the culprit was a little easier to find...
