It could be a variety of things. The first thing that comes to mind is the cranking amps of the battery. Is it in good condition? Second, since the 50 series cars have tend to rust out at the battery box directly over the fuse panel there might be a problem there. The engine may still need to be rebuilt but that's a whole different issue. May sure your connections are good, the grounds especially. Heck, use a set of jumpers cables and go directly to the starter and see if it improves the cranking speed.

Question Timing Issue?

Sometimes a distributor cap is molded a little different. Or perhaps you put the wires on in the wrong place. When I last tuned my GT by ear I set the timing too far advanced and had a very similar issue, very slow crank.
It may be as simple as backing off the timing a little. I have decided, Opel starters, don't have a lot of power. Either way you look at it, the problem is the same, and is a simple fix. My motto is start with the simple stuff. Hope this helps.

Just a little surprised at broken valve springs. I'm only use to seeing that on engines that have been run HARD and usually with more than standard lifts. Is your engine stock and how many miles do you think are on it. Have you done a compression test on it and results if you have?
