Unanswered: 3/4 mark Temp
Is it possible or a common problem for the for the water pump impeller to fail or spin on the shaft? Any other ideas. Just don't want to overheat it yet...or ever. Thanx Justin

Did you check the new thermostat to see if it is opening at the correct temp? I've seen new ones fail or never open. It's a simple thing to check, a pan of water on the stove with a cooking thermometer, to see at what temp the thermostat starts opening.

Mine was overheating today too on the way back from V.I.R. I have a 180 degree in it and a 160 on the shelf that I'm going to replace it with for the summer. As Ron said check it with a pan of water on the stove with a cooking thermometer, to see at what temp the thermostat starts opening.

Jarrell,
Unless your 180 degree thermostat is not opening properly replacing it with a 160 degree thermostat will not solve the overheating problem. Once the thermostat opens the overall efficiency of the system determines the operating temperature. The 160 degree thermostat will open sooner and the temp will climb to the temperature the system can handle. If the system can’t dissipate the heat faster than it’s generated, the system overheats. Now that you mention it, the thermostat was open when I opened the housing and I grabbed it out and watched it close. Yes, it was hot and I made a mess.

I have the opposite "problem". My temp gauge has never made it to the half mark, mostly stays put at a bit past 1/4. It does move so I guess it's working. Just don't want a false sense of security if it's reading wrong. I do have a 7 blade fan, no shroud. There is auxiliary fan in front of the radiator but it has never come on on it's own and I suspect it doesn't work. I should test it I guess. No idea what thermostat is in there either. Should I investigate something or enjoy the cool running?

Jvan, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Enjoy the cool running!
Noticed yesterday, I had to drive it to the store and the gauge stays around the 3/4 when driving, but sitting at a long light it moves down to about 1/2. Perhaps I'll get a 160 stat. Yeah, yeah, I know about all of that warping and junk. Was kinda having to hustle it though.
