Jim, I always had good luck making power with 1350-1450 degrees F. Opels do run hot, they tend to run over 1600 degrees if everything is not 'just right'.

Pick a pipe

I use a truck-style pyrometer on my car, it's probe goes into the exhaust pipe about a foot aft of the collector. I've seen it go to just a tad beyond 1200. I don't really know what that means, or how to affect it or why. It was just kind of donated by a truck shop to play with. Just for fun, ya know...

Jim, when we used a pyrometer on the engine dyno, we fitted the probes about 1"-1.5" from the head. #2 consistently ran the hottest on every 1.9-headed Opel I dynoed. #3 was close behind, about 25-50 degrees cooler. Then #4, usually, at about 100-125 degrees cooler, and finally #1, which on some engines was as much as 200 degrees cooler than #2.
I was able to correct this for the most part with a split profile camshaft and by balancing the exhaust port flows with extra porting work....but for your type of racing this is not legal to do. All you can do is tune for the hottest cylinder. Bob |
