Perfectly fine to remove the thermostat housing, There is a gasket that will most likely need replacing, you could try putting some RTV sealer on it, but I don't suggest it. Remember you will loose some coolant when you take it off so have a pan ready on the floor.

Ah c'mon now, RTV seals EVERYTHING!!! But don't take my word for it.
