Unanswered: new exhaust
Has anyone looked at the exhaust system that is for sale in the classifieds? I just had an estimate for my 71 GT of $450 for a complete exhaust system installed front to back including a turbo muffler and 3 1/2" resonator tips. Any thoughts on the exhaust system for sale? What the quality of this one compared to new aftermarket exhaust? Cost? To me the price does not seem to bad for the exhaust in the classifieds. Any tips or info. is appreciated. |

The trick for an aftermarket exhaust is space... its very limited. There's almost not enough room for the muffler in front of the axle in the first place and then its even more difficult to get the pipe out of the muffler and then turn it straight up and over the axle... Now imagine gettin that pipe split in two where it feeds the two exhaust tips evenly... Its hard to get it done looking good, sounding good and not causing more restriction than stock.
Unless its a muffler shop you have lots of confidence in, I wouldn't use them. Are they willing to rework the system if you don't like the way they did something? At who's cost? Yours or their's If you are dealing with a stock engine, its hard to beat the stock exhaust. If you have a few performance improvements and/or just want that growl sound, then its aftermarket. Now the kicker is which aftermarket muffler will give you that sound you like without TOO much reverbation in the cabin. I used the Walker/Dynomax/Thrush turbo muffler becuase if I didn't like the sound, it was cheap enough to cut off and throw away... Also, it has perforated internal tubes vs louveres so that restriction is minimized. There are several good threads with pictures and such... I'm sure a quick seach will dig them up GL

Sometime last year I was wondering how best to replace the exhaust on my GT. I called OGTS and they sent me a CD-ROM with pictures on it of an exhaust set-up that differs from stock (if you don't want to go with the stock exhaust which OGTS also sells). I would give them a call and discuss your options. I ended up going with the stock parts from OGTS.

The Bosal exhaust that Duane is selling is the same one that I have on my GT. By now, most original exhaust are rusted and don't look very good. The Bosal system looks good and will look good for quite sometime. If I'm not mistaken, isn't this system discontinued? I believe that OGTS and most other places now sell another brand which I've heard is not quite as well made.

Here's a couple pictures of my custom exhaust. As I stated above, there's not much room and the bends are tight. The muffler shop I used tried their best to keep things as low restrtiction as possible. When we discussed how he planned to split the pipe into two, he described something different and less restrictive than what you see installed. When I asked what happened, we walked back to his scrap pile and he showed me 2 failed attempts... so this is what I got. Its just fine for stock and mild performance, but would probable be too restrictive in the upper RPMs of a race engine.
I supplied the muffler, tips and O-rings, they suppled the rest. Price at the muffler shop was about $225 for 2" from the down pipe back.
