Unanswered: Broke 2 bolts on bottom manifold.

I want to take my transmission out and my exhuast was in the was. Ok so this is gonna be easy right? What can go wrong? Well 20 minutes ago I just tried to loosen up that exhuast and get it off. Well the FIRST bolt i tried to loosen broke off. UH OH! THAT AINT GOOD. Well maybe thats just a bad one ill try the other one. There goes another one! Well THAT DEFEINTELY AINT GOOD! No im sitting here in fear of having a major exhuast leak. Because lets face the fact easy-outs are a waste of time and money and never work. Im thinking about just leaving the opel sit for a while and save up for a nice header then break all the other bolts off and solve my problem.

Repair

You can pull the manifold off the head, and if your exhaust is clamped together, then remove the head pipe from the front muffler, to pull the manifold free of the car. A machine shop can drill out broken bolts, then either redrill the holes or install threaded studs (to attach the head pipe with nuts).
It's not unusual for these bolts to break (this was noted in the current Blitz engine removal article, and it was suggested to unbolt the manifold at the head instead).

In the mean time, buy a can of PB Blaster and spray all the engine and suspension bolts.... that should give them lots of time to loosen up...

My dad has the pentrating fluid or oil. Its penatrating something ha! I know its great for bolts, he got it from his work and they use it of aircrafts. This weekend were gonna slap alot of that on the bolts that were breaking.

Since your "suppose" to take radiator out i guess i will do that and take my fan off and hoses and everything since my 65 amp alternator is coming in the mail any day. So have everything out of my way and then power wash my engine while everything is out.

I've busted a few of them myself. Anti-Seize lube might help to prevent future headaches.

Man, you are just having problems all over. I'll tell you that your not having any problems that most of the rest of us haven't expirienced as well. This is particularly common. It something that everyone dreads, even the ones that have done it several time. That's why a lot of people go to the studs.

Yah im having one problem after another but im kinda glad but frusterated at the same time.

My brake booster and MC went out.. I bought a rebuilt one from OGTS. Dont have to worry about that for a long time.

My alternator just went out. I have a rebuilt 65 amp with a NEW regulator it looks wonderful bought from OGTS cant wait to put it on. So thats another problem out of the way for a long time.

The car didn't come with a carb so i bought a cheap solex to see if it would even run it did. And i upgraded to a weber about a month ago. Bought it BRAND NEW from OGTS. So thats another thing out of the way.

When Opelbits gets some time he said we will make new harnesses for my alternator and rewire my headlights. So thats another problem out of the way.

Im gonna see if this transmission i pulled out has any leaks I know it works just hopefully no leaks. I didnt leak when i pulled it off and it had a full pan of oil so i think im safe. But after i put that one then my transmission will hopefully work good. Since i have a manta transmission and its hard to shift into 4th it rubs on the side. So thats another problem out of the way.

While I have my tranny out me and dad are gonna rent a welder and chop my rusted floor boards out and put sheet metal and weld in on the car. And do some more body work.

So im thinking when its time to put tranny in ill be ready to buy a paint gun and paint my car in the garage for a decent look and i will be smooth riding in my opel.

When I replaced my exhaust the bolts that hold the header onto the manifold snapped right off. It isn't hard to find a parts store that also had a drill press. I just had to pull the manifold off the engine, take it in and they drilled out the busted bolts. Not much money changed hands and it was way easier for me than trying to get them out by myself. I got new bolts from OGTS.

Make sure when you spray them with penetrating oil that you rap them a few times with a hammer. It's supposed to help the oil penetrate better. I'd do this a few times over a couple of days at least before I tried to remove them.

HTH,

Harold
