Unanswered: Intake to Exhaust manifold bolts
They are a wierd 12 pt, maybe 6mm? It doesn't look like a standard Torx drive, is it?

No, they are metric 12 point, just go to a good parts store, you can buy a whole set.

Excellent, thanks!
Notice the new Avatar! I just learned how to do that.... ![]() The GT is 'technically' my sons, and for some reason he really likes penguins, so it is in respect for my son!

Btw
The same 8mm 12-point or "Tri-square" bit as it is often called is the same size as used for the cam retaining cap screws - so you need one!
The sets come with 6mm; 8mm; 10mm and 12mm bits in then usually and you need all except the 6mm one for work on Opels - unless someone can tell us where on a Opel there are 6mm Tri-square cap screws ... ??

I would think MAC would have them. Snap On does as well as KD tools that are available at some auto parts houses. These 12 pt./triple square bits are used on other German cars I believe.

I believe I pulled a fuel pump ONCE that had that type of bolt holding it on. I've never seen another one. Harold |

Local!
Finally bought a complete set from a "Power Built" tool display at the local Home Handyman store - Smith's City Market, Christchurch - New Zealand. They are also used to undo Ford 4-cylinder head bolts. Any good Automotive tool store should have them. There are pictures on this site plus more discussion in other threads too. See: http://www.opelgt.com/forums/showthr...ght=tri-square Picture in post #12 Here: http://www.opelgt.com/forums/showthr...bolts+12-point

I will look around and let you know what I find. I have rebuilt a 1.9L twice before but it has been 20 years. I still have the 12mm one I bought from Snap-On that is for the head bolts. It was pretty expensive at the time, I want to say about $25 for the one. In the previous rebuilds I just removed the head and put the same on back on, same with the manifolds, I just yanked them as a set and replaced them when the engine was done. I didn't know back then about the mismatch in the carb outlet and the Intake, so I had never done anything to it. This forum is great in that I now know more about what can be done for free to increase power! Like porting the intake manifold. Thanks.

Search for "Lisle" which make speciality tools available at virtually EVERY decent automotive store. And read

Just to follow up on this thread, after searching 3 different local autoparts stores and one dedicated tool store with no luch, I finaly found one in my brothers tool box. He said he bought it locally from another autoparts store, so they are around, but you really have to look a little for them.
Thanks all!

XZN Bits
The 12 point is fairly common in Europe. I bought mine at a local store for approx $11, and it contains M5,M6,M8,M10, and M12 and bit holders for 3/8" and 1/2" ratchet. It's 10 year warranty tools, so they should be fairly high quality. Maybe if there is any interest for it we could arrange something(unless the shipping is terrible!!)

Serrted bit set.
Nice set of bits. How much would it cost to send a set like that to Texas? Thanks, Dave |

OK, I got the tool and found out that you CAN strip the head of a triple square bolt. I don't know how I did it, but I did. I am going to try the impact driver idea.
I thought these bolts were chosen due to their reluctance to being stripped!

i've never usually had much luck with those paticular 4 bolts. usually just drill the heads off so i can pick the intake up off from the exhaust manifold. then use some heat and a stud extractor on them if i manage to strip them, as i usually do.
asdasc: what part of michigan are you from?

Clinton Township - between Sterling Hts and Mt Clemens.
If you have been in it for a while, you may have known my brother - Rick Anderson. He has given the GT to my son Kyle, his God son. It is turning into a bit of a father/son project.
