Unanswered: exhaust for 2.2

Putting a 2.2 liter engine in my 72 opel gt. Anyone got any specifics as to the best exhuast to use for performance? Why did the original exhaust have two mufflers? Do i still need to go with two mufflers?

i do belive the orignal 2.2 was just a single pipe. i have a 98 sunfire with a 2.2 and it just has one but i think it matters what it came out of not the engine itself dont hold me to it....

the 2 boxes do different jobs 1 is to kill high frequency noise the other for low frequency noise

Hi Baz, Interesting, this is the first time I have heard that. I am sure you are right. That leads me to finally ask a question that has been bouncing around in my head. What is the difference between a muffler and a resonator? Which was which in the original, stock GT set up?

The forward cannister in the GT is the actual muffler. The rear section with the exhaust tips is the resonator. While the muffler has actual sound-attenuation capabilities, the resonator is simply there to reduce the resonance that occurs with a 4-cylinder engine. At certain rpms it can really pound the eardrums, even though it's not technically that loud on a DB meter. The GT resonator is in fact a hollow shell, there are no baffles or sound-absorbing materials inside it.

Thanks Bob and Baz, so in reality, the resonator shouldn't restrict power at all, right? I need to 'fix' my exhaust, as the neighbors think it is too loud. I like it.

I have the stock head pipe going back to a 5" round muffler and then a standard thin pipe back to the single chrome tip.

I was planning to use 2" pipe from the Y to the straight flow (Flowmaster type) muffler and then 2.5" over the rear axle to a U with resonator tips. I am not sure I like the resonator tips appearance. Would it hurt performance (Flow) to use a stock type resonator in the back with that set up?

Thanks,

there is a horseshoe shaped pipe
that joins the 2 tip pipes ,that is full of small holes and for a full on engine can be a small restriction
i was chatting in a thread a week or so ago about how to rebuild the inside and use loose rockwool in it to help with sound and not harm flow by using expanded steel sheet to remake the pipe and add a feeder pipe from the inlet with a hole into the horseshoe (real easy to see how it would work if you open a stock back box )

you then get the gasses out as quick as it can and the rockwool helps take the edge off the noise for the neighbours

I have the luck to know somebody who made me a stainless(?) steel exhaust for my 2.2. It sounds very good, it has a deep sound but not overtaken. I should add some pics of the connections between the parts of this exhaust, it's so easy and wellthought. No more pipe pressed into the other one, no more problems taking it apart (rusted or jammed). Remind me to show a pic, because I have the car not at home and I don't know when my next ride with this GT will be. Then I'll shoot the pics.
