Unanswered: jet black splatter from tail pipes...

this is probably not just an opel issue, but i'm car stupid. lol.

i get jet black splattering from the tail pipes on the pavement behind me *and in my face today when i was trying to find a rattle*

any the hoo. the muffler system is a rigged 25 doollar pos anything muffler with some pipe mig'd together *cut the old twins off a bad rear muffler for 'appearance'

anyways, someone mentioned in passing they thought i was running the gas too rich, but my POS solex and me don't get along very well.

she's been having trouble idling, for sure, running from 12 - 15 rpms intermittently, and dying completely after acceleration and pushing in the clutch to shift.

anyways, looking for suggestions/observation/advice

i do have a weber here, *tahnks gene* that needs rebuilding, but if this is an issue that needs to be solved asap, plz let me know.

it will be carbon soot mixing with water vapour to make muck that spits out the back
as you have said the carb is running rich it will do this , if you are going to put the weber on soon then i would just leave it for now ,if you are going to wait a while then tune up the solex to get rid of it and save a few $$$'s in gas

Talking solex

The old carbs have been used as everything from doorstops to vitamin dispensers.

I'm not sure how the Solex is set up internally but if its like most carburetors, if the floats on the inside have been bent out of position/dirt under the needle(usually when putting the top of the carb back on) than it might be letting too much gas in. This would explain it having to be idled up so high to run, sputtering idle, black splattering, and the car shutting off. Might want to check to see if the floats are bent out of position and make sure the needle is seating. Hope that helps

Yeah, I have a couple of unused Solex's that I got curious on. I have heard so much bad about them that I wanted to take it apart to see what the fuss was.

They seem ok on the inside, from what I could tell.

Check with Otto if you want to get one running right. From what I hear, he loves them and really knows how to make them purr.

The Arnoldt Bristol used Solex Carb's on a BMW engine, I believe. I suppose that if they are properly adjusted, they should work o.k. They get better mileage than the Webers.

I've had 73 1.9 with a weber easily pass Nevada emission testing and still spatter that watery black soot, especially when warming up.... Can I really lean it out enough to stop it and not have the carb way too lean??

depending on the dew point the humidity ect ect exspecially when its cold out as the exuast heats up and reaches the dew point youll create a little condensation in the exuast not much you can do about it but when its warm out it shouldnt do that

Emission check relief

To make sure the sniffer don't get you, weld or braze a piece of stainless tubing 1/4 " into the headpipe run it to a one-way check valve and from there plum it into your blower motor box when they plug the sniffer in, turn on the blower fan, "how clean do want it sir, low, medium or high
