Exclamation Unanswered: Engine sets out. Help

On my 1972 GT. the engine sets out, i only happens after about 10 min of driving, then the engine sets out and the RPM drops to 0, at first i comes again after 2 or 3 sec. but continuing to drive i get worse an after about 15 min the engine stops, it feels lige the engine is not igniting or somthing like that. the engine just slowes down the car as if i have removed my foot from the throtel.

when i stop the car, and wait for 10 sec it starts fine again, bulk sets out again after 30 sec. i leave the car alone for 1 hour, i stars fine again and i can drive for 10 min.

Does anny one have sone idears, for information we at the moment hav about 1 to 2 Degrees Celcius, and i rains. i some one think i has somthing to do with this.

Last night i added 2 L of Karburator-alcohol to the tank. i diden't help this morning where it sets out after 10 min.

Cold....

I see that the temperarure is near freezing. Have you seen any ice or frost on the outside of the carburettor? Especially after it has been running for a while.

and the strange thing is tat the RPM gauge drops to 0 RPM, when i sets out, eventhow the enginge is being turned by the wheels af about 2000 RPM.

looks like you have an electrical fault if the rev counter says 0 revs and
the engine is being spun by the car rolling along when it cut out
check trough the ignition wiring from key to engine and the battery to the key for any broken wires ,it might be gone inside a wire or at a conection and is making contact ok till you drive over something then its not in contact and cuts out

The tach should read 0 rpm's if it isn't running. It is recieving it's signal from the coil. If the coil isn't firing then the tach should read 0. I believe Baz is correct about an electrical problem. Make sure all connections are clean and tight and inspect the distributor cap and rotor, maybe even try spraying some type of moisture displacing lubricant inside of the distributor cap. Is your battery and all of the connections to it good?

Harold

Does your car have points or pertronics igniter? I had my pertronics wired wrong and it had the same symptoms as you discribe.

I had that same problem on my Ascona c. That was the distributor having an internal fault. I was told if it were a Bosch, I needed to change the whole distributor. Of course it was... Just a thought, don`t know if this is your problem, but the symptoms are the same. That car didn`t have points.

I am by no means an expert on this, but was once told by a mechanic that this problem could be caused by the condensor heating up, shuts down, then when cool, lets you start it again. I'll leave it to the experts to comment on if that can be a possible problem area or not.

Suh! us "Yanks" and "Rebels" for sure don't have a "King" anything unless it is our pets name. Are you referring to the "coil" wire that is similar in appearance to the spark plug wires?

Always find it interesting the differences in english even from region to region here in the states.

another possiblety

I have had the fuel filter give me this problem, it stops up, the engine dies, wait a few minutes the sediments settle out (down) and the engine starts and runs fine then stops again a few minutes later. Check the fuel filter, or for possible obstruction in the tank around the wire-mesh sock possible but not to likely. I would bet it is the Fuel Filter it is cheap and easy to replace.

Hi

Thanks for alle the idears.

I got down to finding the problem on Satuday, it was a falty wire connection form the Hall sensor i the distributor, so the spark was missing when the engine sets out.
The problem was due to the former ovner havinge replaced som parts and just twistet the wires together, and then just wraped it with insulationtape. one wire was compleatly broken when i took the tape off. at the two others was i a bad shape.
Now i have fixed the problem at i runs fine again
