Question Unanswered: Help, Shifting Problem

I was out driving the other day with no problems all day. The next morning
when I tried to shift my Gt it would not go into any gear. If the engine is off it will shift into gear, but with the engine started it will not. I have checked the clutch cable, arm into the transmission etc and don't see any thing wrong.
Is there something I am missing?? Or am I going to have to pull the transmission out to find the problem. Please Help if you have a suggestion.
Thanks
Keith

Try shifting into reverse

Hello,

I had a similar problem and thought my trans was bad. Had a friend shift the trans while I watch the linkage. He put it to reverse then the trans was able to shift into other gears.

have you tried working the clutch with someone watching under the car at the fork to see if it is moving. also i have had my gt clutch disk stick to the flywheel with the same conditions you described but that was after it had sat for some time mike brooks bristol va

I've also seen the damper springs in the friction disc break, and the pieces get wedged where they dont belong resulting in constant clutch drag. This typically occurs if the vehicle is driven VERY hard though.

There's a quick easy test to determine if the problem is with the clutch or clutch mechanism, or if it's a transmission or linkage issue:

1) Raise the rear of the car and remove both rear tires (to minimize the inertia of the driveline).

2) Start the engine and without pressing on the clutch pedal try shifting through the gears.

3) If it now goes through the gears, then the problem is related to the clutch dragging or not disengaging, possibly due to the clutch mechanism. But if you still can't shift through the gears, then you're looking at an internal transmission or shift linkage problem.

keith,

were you driving in the rain or did it freeze over night. Some time the clutch disk will freeze to the flywheel or rust to it. Easy to check this if visual checks show that the clutch fork and arm movements are working as needed.

Place the car in second gear and rock the car back and forth with some one keeping the clutch pushed in.. this action should break the disk loose. Some times you may need to tow the car a little with the clutch pushed in. If this is not the issue maybe some one else has a better idea. Ron

This happened to me too, turned out to be a seized pilot bearing.
