Unanswered: is this feasable?

the clutch went to hell in the manta today, but i think i know what it is. the clutch has been chattering the last few weeks, and progressively gets worse. well, today, admitidely i was ripping into her pretty hard, dumped the clutch at 5,000 to spin a little bit, hit 2nd gear and it didnt feel like i had much clutch, and nothing fealt right at all. dont feel like it disengages all the way, and with the clutch all the way in, you can hear the disk spin against something, and will suddenly grab hard.

I THINK: that 1 or more bolts to the pressureplate may have come loose since i didnt replace the lock washers, and as that bolt came loose, the worse it got, the worse the clutch chattered because of the pressureplate not being held securely to the flywheel, but would go away when the clutch was released, as its own strength held it tightly....and this massive failure i guess you'd call it, could have been a bolt finally shearing from me snapping the clutch under large loads? i'm sure i dont have to tell you guys i beat the living daylights out of this car, or any other car that is MINE for that matter, i'm sure if it was somebody elses car i'd last me forever, but its mine and i just have to beat on it.....whatchya'll think?

jared get a small mirror and a good torch and have some one turn the engine so you can look at the bolts through the clutch arm hole , you might be able to see if you have a loose bolt (a 3rd person to work the clutch would help )
while doing this breath regular because i would not hold my breath that the pressure plate of friction plate has gone

Baz means a 'good light' not an actual "torch" ( whitch is british for light). Hopefully if it is the preasure plate and the clutch is still intact your fly wheel will be okay, but it could be gouged out to if you did blow the clutch and preasure plate up.

i might look throught he clutch fork hole, but i'm not fixing the car this late in the year, somebody will buy it as it is, i have another trans for it and whatnot, got the parts, just no ambition.but i think i may have blew the clutch, cuz i've never heard it spin against something before, its always been silent, but dont understand it randomly grabbing hard and then going to nothing with the clutch pedal pushed in, but always grab when its out....eh, who knows?

You probably delaminated the clutch disc....that is, part of the friction material separated from the metallic disc. Been there, done that (in my youth anyway). Removing the lower inspection cover will probably 'drain' out the pieces of clutch material to confirm or disprove this theory.

i'll laugh if i smoked the clutch, i really would. gotta be a record of some sort. did 8500 miles in the manta, and 600 miles in my GT with this clutch, i dont slip it, but i do snap it, hard and often, 2nd gear slams are just too great. as i think about it bob, you are probably right, i did smell clutch when i lit the tires but faintly so blew it off as nothing........i dont think i even need to look, but i know i'll have to.

Heh! Heh!

Us "old guys" have been there too - eventually got tired of hauling out gear boxes and fixing clutches. Guess why I drive automatics now!

ok, changed the clutch in the manta today with brenden, who purchased the car.....altho i still need to adjust it right so he can drive it home next weekend...i'm utterly amazed at what i did to the clutch, did something nobdoy thought of, i'll post pics of it , and i did put 2 holes in the bellhousing!!!!

i broke the steel part of the disk in 2. it ripped all the way around the inside of the disk about a half inch away from the friction material. so the splined part of the disk spun on the trans still, and the outside friction material just broke off the disk, but didnt "de-laminate" friction material still looks new!!!

my god that was impressive, i think you deserve a medal for being able to do that much damage with only 85 hp

oh, and i didn't see a cop the whole way home either, made it home in 4 1/2 hours... including the 1/2 hour i was stuck at the boarder because of a couple broken down cars on the bridge

the first pic is of the bellhousing, showing a hole....hard to see with the crappy cam, but look close to the middle bellhousing bolt, just above the provision for the clutch fork you can see it, hole about the size of a pencil. the other 3 are of the clutch disk and pressureplate.....i fubared it bad and proud of it!
