Exposed Flywheel?

I'm still working on my 69 GT, its not on the road yet. We bought it about six months ago and towed it home. While fixing a carburetor linkage malfunction we noticed that, a portion of the bottom of the flywheel appears to be exposed (about two inches) where the engine meets the transmission. We believe it's the flywheel because we can see teeth on the wheel; this is only visable from underneath the vehicle. It does appear that the prior owner did some engine work as the oil pan does not appear to be original. Should there be some type of cover or shield over the flywheel so its not visable and protected?

There's supposed to be a 1/2 moon shaped cover for this area, but, you have stated that the oil pan has been swapped, this would explain why the cover is not there

Since mine does not have this half moon plate; can you tell me what's involved to get one installed? Do I have to remove the engine or trans?

Neither have to be removed. However the engine/tranny stabilizer brackets (also shown in my photo) need to be removed or at least loosened up to fit the shield in place.
