Thanks for the info and the photo. I knew where it went on the lever, just couldn't remember where I took it off the other end. I think the spring is too short, and think the previous owner had it grabbing somewhere else. That's the least of my worries. I just realized that in my haste to put everything back together, that the tranny I put in came off a Manta!!!! Different shift bracket where the shifter goes in. It all came back to me like a bad dream!! Had the same problem many years ago. Only way to fix it-REMOVE THE TRANNY!!!! Getting good at it now. Only took 14 minutes. Now I quit til tomorrow.

70 Tranny out, later model one in...
...and the return spring seems WAY too short to make the cross member. Is it possible that there are two different lengths for this spring?

Somehow I also ended up with a spring way too short. Never did figure out how, or why.
But until you find a replacement off eBay or junkyard, a bungee cord will get you by. They're cheap - keep a spare in the car. Yeah, I know, sounds pretty damn shade-tree to me too - but hey, in a pinch.... |
