Unanswered: Speedometer Gear

I removed the speedo cable from my 70 GT to check and see why it was not working. When I did, I found that the cable was broken about 3 inches past the square steel part that inserts into the gear. What the problem is, when I went to unscrew the cable, the whole gear assembly came out of the transmission and I am not sure how the pin is supposed to hold it all in. Is it supposed to screw in or just be tapped in. I can see an indentation in the gear assembly where it is supposed to fit. Also, is this the "later" 70 transmission or the "early" one?

Thanks,

Chris
