Unanswered: drained trany, interlock detent spring question

i took the cover off my 70 gt to drain the oil on the 4 speed and the "interlock detent ball and spring" came out . i don't know how it goes back together, do i put the spring in the hole with the little part that sticks in the spring setting against the cover or put the little part in the hole on top of the spring and have the spring against the cover? may be hard to understand

detent ball and spring

The ball goes in first, then the spring and the "shoe" that goes into the end of the spring goes in lasty and is held in place by the transmission cover pan.

Detent Ball

No, the ball doesn't come out every time, but you need to make sure that it is in place. That is your reverse detent and without it the trtansmission will jump out of gear unless you hold it in reverse while backing up.
