Unanswered: Towing a Kadett B with a towbar?

I would like to tow my 1967 Kadett Rallye with a tow bar. All four wheels will roll. Do I need to unhook the drive shaft? I am going about 400 miles. The car is a 4 speed stick.

Thanks

-Alex

You only need to remove the drive shaft if your car is an automatic transmission. If you have a 4 speed you should be good to go. I towed my Manta from California to TX at speed up to 85 miles per hour. Ron

Before you make that trip you should make sure the gear lube in the transmission and rearend are full, also re-pack the front inner and outer wheel bearings and run the air pressure in the tires at about 25psi.

I towed my 4-speed Kadett with a tow bar just a few weeks ago. 860 miles without any problems, with the drive shaft connected. Average speed 65 mph (because of gas prices...), top speed maybe 75 mph while passing.
Just make sure that the key is in the ignition and the steering wheel lock is disengaged!

For years, we flat towed our '71 1900 (Ascona A) rally car many hundreds of miles, rallied 300-400 miles, and retowed again. Never had any issues. Longest tows were about 1600 miles roundtrip, with a 300 mile rally in-between. This was with the 1.9L engine and trannie; can't make any defintive statements on the 1.1L, but towing is OK for most all manual trannies.

Good luck,
Mark B.
