Unanswered: Remove Pilot Bearing for Auto?

I know a standard trans 1.9 engine requires a pilot bearing and an automatic does not. Question is, if you convert a 4 spd car to an automatic, do you NEED to remove the pilot bearing to have the auto hook up right or can you just leave it in?

You can leave it, it does not interfere with anything on the automatic transmission.

rip it out

Please pull the pilot bearing out. I ruined the block on the 30k original mile engine from my third Opel trying to bolt it into a Kadett automatic by not pulling the pilot bearing. The center hub on the torque converter stuck out just enough that when I tightened the engine to trans mounting bolts the converter didn't seat fully in the crankshaft and one mounting ear on the engine broke off.

Well I certainly don't want any problems like that! It should come out easy enough....I just put it in to hook up a 4 speed for in one car and now the plans are changed to put it with an automatic into a different Opel.

There may be a "Mechanic's Rulebook" somewhere listing the do's and don'ts of basic methods of assembly and disassembly, I haven't seen one. But if there was such a thing, in the top ten would be "never force parts together by tightening up the bolts. They have to fit together first, then the bolts go in."
Huh, Stephen?
It sucks to learn the hard way. Worse yet to ruin a valuable part!

I wish I could help you with your question, Gordy. But I don't know. I don't do automatic Opels.

auto swap

I am almost done with my swap but I went from auto to 4spd. You will need to remove the pilot bushing… there is an adapter for the flex plate that fits in the end of the crank that centers itself in the hole that the pilot bearing is or was in your case.
