Unanswered: Problem with trans or clutch!

shifter in my 70 gt doesnt really seem to go into gear when the car is running or not running, but today i put the shifter the 1st position, pushed and held the clutch in, and when i tried to start the car it jumped foward! This sounds like a clutch problem to me, but i just wanted to see if this happen to any of you guys?

P.s. my car drove great before my father and i parked it in the garage for 4 years.

Clutch Problem

If the car has sat up that long my money is on the clutch disc being stuck to the flywheel. Sometimes they can be unstuck easily and sometimes they can be a large P>I>T>A>. I would first try pulling the car in fourth gear(not running) and kick the clutch petal in and out while being towed, you can tell when it releases, it will quit dragging the rear wheels. If that doesn't work you may have to take the transmission and bellhousing down and unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel, but I would try the other method a few times before I did that, good luck.

Yep, I agree with opelnut10.
If my GT sits for a few weeks the high humidity here will rust the clutch plates together.
I usually put the car in gear (a gear that will not run you into the garage wall!) and crank the starter with my foot on the brake.

Try opelnut10 ideas.

Another way is to put the rear of the car up on good jack stands, then start the car and let it warm up. Usually the heat will loosen up the clutch plates.
Apply the brake when the car is in neutral and it should free it up.

Yes, and you talk about having a bad day that is the start of one. Every time I had the chance I always remembered to grease to pilot bearing well and also put a coat of grease on the end of the input shaft. Next to wrong off bolt in a exhaust flange that had got to be second on MY list of having a bad day. I guess there are some other tough jobs working on these cars but those two always made put me in a foul mood for several days afterward
