Unanswered: th200-4r?

hello there!

i'm a new member here...

i've got a daily driven '72 opel manta, with a 2.0L CIH engine with a th180 automatic...
i was wondering;
some time ago, i read a tread about auto trannie's, which said, that a th200 will bolt on behind a cih engine...

my question:

will a th200-4r (overdrive) bolt behind a cih too?? and if it does, would there be enough space under my manta and what kind of modifications could i expect?

thanks...

Although the THM200R4 is a good transmission (have one in my pro-touring Buick) it will not bolt up to the Opel CIH.

Now Opel did make a overdrive transmission based on the THM180, and these can be coaxed into a GT or Manta.

Actually saw one of these transmissions implanted into a GT at the International GT meet in Leinfelden, Germany a few weeks ago.

Tight fit, with the shortest drive shaft I have ever seen!!!!!

i know the th180 was also dubbed 3L30
for what i know it was followed up by the 4L30e and 4L40e, commonly used by opel and BMW in the late 80's / early 90's... maybe you were refering to it?
but this was an electronical regulated unit, making it difficult to swap in a early 70's car, because it has no ecu...

like i said, i was just wondering

well then... would a small block chevy fit in?

Most, if not all, GM overdrive automatics have a "lock-up" converter which requires a electronic control to lock up the converter. I know that you cannot run a 700R4 without a "kickdown" detent cable without burning it up. You can rig it with a toggle switch to activate the lock-up converter but you have to turn it off when you stop the car or it will choke down the engine just like having a stick shift and not pushing in the clutch. They do make a kit to go on the 200R4 & the 700R4 that locks up the converter and unlocks it when you are stopping but it is about $300 US. If you want overdive my advice is switch it to a five speed stick shift, less money and a lot less trouble.

Dennis, are you talking about the 4-speed + Overdrive manual gearboxes from the mid-80es?
