    Manual Trans Issues

Ok I pulled the manual trans from my GT and have some questions.

I pulled it out by just pulling the trans and leaving the bellhousing, when I got it out what I am assuming is the front seal is still in the bell housing. Is that normal?

Next I notice the front input shaft bearing has play in it. Not very much up and down but alot in and out. I would say 1/8" is alot IMO. I could be wrong but the whole bearing moving in and out like that seems strange.

The holes in the front of the trans where it meets the bell housing should there be some sort of plug in them? Mine are open as I found when I removed the trans I slightly tipped it forward and grease came running out.

It seemed to shift fine before I pulled it and I wouldn't have pulled it but I need to fix the freeze plugs. Just would like to make sure this is nothing abnormal to this particular trans. Thanks Larry

This is normal ..the bellhousing is the front of the trans. and that is why the front seal is in there and the gasket also seals the front of the trans. and holds the front brg. in place. HTH

    Gasket ...

Yep - another Opel 'feature' - the bellhousing is the front bearing retainer and has the front seal pressed into it.

There is supposed to be a gasket between the bellhousing and front of the gearbox that needs to be renewed each time the bits are parted ... or there will be a constant oil leak. The four bolts that hold them together will leak as well if not sealed when replaced.

Replace both the gasket and the seal while you have the gearbox out!!

NOTE: It is better to remove the g/box with the bellhousing attached - just more difficult - and far easier to replace the gasket correctly with the bellhousing out too.

PS: The front bearing is 'sloppy' because it is no longer retained by the bellhousing, in your case.

Thanks, Thats is what I wanted to know. While I have the trans out I am replacing all the seals. The PO just used silicon to seal up the front of the trans but I order all the correct gaskets and seals today. I am also replacing the rear engine seal and the oil pan gasket.

You might want to check the seals on the shifter shafts (is that the right name lol) its a good time to replace them when the tranny is out.

Oh I am going to replace every seal on the trans while I have it out. I think some where there is cheat for getting the seal out on the passenger side end of the shaft. I am hoping so cause it looks like the only way to remove the seal is to get the shaft out of the trans.s

I think the cheat is to grind off the shaft where it rivets the lever on. Then drill and tap for a washer and screw to hold the lever on the shaft. Of course remove and install seal before you re-install lever!!

While you've got the tranny out don't forget to check the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft - probably best to just go ahead and replace it. Check the clutch and release bearing too.
