Maxx, how long has it been since you checked the fluid? In the GT only fill it to within 1/2" of the fill hole. Other models because the engine doesn't tilt can fill until it is level with the fill hole.

Oil!

Opel bell housings are bolted to the front of the trans with a paper gasket to keep the oil inside - the back face of the bell housing is an integral part of the front of the gearbox sealing system.

The bolts that hold the bell housing on to the gearbox have a nasty habit of getting loose - and then the oil drips out of the g/box. Everything gets hot and wears till there are 'nasty' noises.

Always check that a gasket is present and the input shaft seal is in good condition ... and that there is actually some oil in the g/box! [EP 80W90 works]

Whining is usually an indication of low oil level in the tranny. Left long enough it will ruin the needle bearings necessitating a rebuild or a swap out. Hard shifting can mean the synchros are worn or the pilot bearing is bad. I had a pilot bearing (needle bearing) go on my '74 Manta in the early '80s. When this happens the input shaft does not stop spinning when the clutch is depressed. It tore up the end of the input shaft. Had to machine down the shaft and make an oil-lite bronze bushing for a pilot bearing. Worked great, never had to change it again.
