Air cover and beneath

Saw this on Ebay ( eBay Motors: Opel : opel (item 230134124046 end time May-31-07 01:00:30 PDT)) and was wondering what that air cover (unique) might be covering?

That is usually common on side draft carburetors such as Stromberg and SU carburetors, mostly any english cars really.

That is a foam filter for a weber (most likely a 32/36) and it is not a very good form of filteration. They clog up quicker that a paper filter and if you ever get a backfire through the top of the carburator it makes a real mess.

The newer style foam filters out there are decent such as Pipercross and Ramair...this is the stuff from Europe used in FIA Touring Cars, rallycross and rallying. The stuff we get in the USA (Weiand for example) is relatively cheap and they degrade badly over time. Easy to catch fire, and when they dry out they crumble and get sucked into your engine. Yummy.

i was shoppin around on ebay for a filter recently, they had one of those foam style filters on there. they look nice but ive seen what they can do to expensive industrial mowers when they degrade. i stuck with the k&n style.

never seen one of those , is it a Weiand bob ?

You all are right.... I had one of those filters back in the late 70's and 80's. Yes, they do dry out and crumble into the carb, and when you got a backfire the foam would harden and slow down the airflow.

Not Bob, but probably a Weiand. IIRC Edelbrock makes a version also. They are usually for larger carbed engines and triangular shaped but they may offer the smaller ones too.

A fine wire screen can be placed underneath it to cut down on damage done by carb backfires. Remember chemistry lab with bunsen burners? The flame doesn't go through the screen.

As long as the filter element is regularly washed (In hot, soapy water!) and replaced they work very well.
