Lightbulb Unanswered: custom dual 32/36 Webers

I have always wanted to try and build a custom dual weber set-up. You could take 2 stock or ported manifolds and cut off the front parts of both manifolds, and then weld a plate over the opening to the plenum chamber on both pieces. You could bolt both pieces onto the head faceing forward and tie them together for strength, and build linkage. Next, mount 2 Weber 32/36 models. You now have a dual progressive carb setup that will not need a heater torn out, and might even get better mileage. Has anyone ever tried to build such an animal, and would it be possible?

It could be done, although it would be wayyy too much carburation as down draft carbs function differently than side draft carbs. So despite smaller bores than most common side draft carbs you will find them needing to be severely choked down and jetted very precisely.

I did build such a beast about 15 years ago. Ran horribly, major bog-fest! However in retrospect all I really needed to do was tie-in the two separate manifolds to create a crossover plenum and with some re-jetting it probably would have run pretty good, similar to the prototype 4-bbl intake I own with the 390 cfm 4-bbl (551 cfm in a 2-bbl rating).

But realistically, it's a lot of airflow for your average street engine. Two 32/36 Webers work out to about 540 cfm...pretty good for 200+ hp and 9500+ rpms. A bit too much for anything tamer than that!

This is a very good point of the differences between the flow of the fours vs. the twins.

i've always wondered how 2 side draft SU carbs would run on the cih , would be easy to make a couple of manifolds and they meter by vacuum so mix is good from idle to flat out , i thought the 1.75" for a stock 1.9 and the 2" for big bore engines up to around 2.2 L

Dual SU's are not bad. However, many people have taken off the dual SU's off Volvo's and put on a downdraft 32/36 DGEV. The Weber gives the same sort of power as "well set up" SU's
