Unhappy Unanswered: Weber 40 DC's

Just wondering if the NOS weber 40 DC's up for sale by CIARA in the ads section are too complex for a begginer. I'm building a 2.0 from a 1.9 and just wondering if I should stay witht the 32/36 weber I have or step up to something more complex??

If YOU'RE building the 2.0 up from a 1.9 then no, the twin Webers are really not that complex. The 3 main areas of the Webers that might be difficult from least to high are (IMHO): Sync'ing/mixture, Throttle cable setup, Jetting.

You might have some other minor issues like thermostat housing location (It might be in the way of the intake manifold) and the heater blower fan if your in a GT. (might have to cut it out.)

Otherwise, it's really not that hard.

Weber 40's

Those appear to be the short manifolds which will clear the heater box, you may have to look at some other air cleaners, but the carbs. will clear. If they came off an Opel you may get lucky and have them be close on jetting and venturi. Linkage and balance is another matter and not for the average driveway-backyard mechanic. They are a very good setup (if they are right) and impressive to look at, but they can be a bear (for drivability) until you do get them right.

thermostat housing needed

this looks a like a great deal to me. The carbs look real clean.
Dual side drafts are easier to make your car run good ,than a 32/36 because you can control the fuel to each port.No electrical crap! what could be more simple..the carb really only goes back together 1 way..i rebuilt 2 at once, first time . this carb is WAY easier to rebuild than a 32 /36 too.
Ron:I have seen your woodworking skills...you can EASILY install the side drafts. we got photos all over the site.

1-All you need are simple hand tools, weiland filters from a mg-triumph,a thermo housing(availible in canada,i think..forgot the name),and a manometer in the ads
2- order my jets from gabriel
3- my car is rock solid,w/o needed adjustmets..runs dam good

worst case scenario...local english car restorers can help you..its a common set up

go for it, best performance $400 upgrade you can do for an opel

Buy Fast!

Better make up your mind - FAST

Now you have let the Opel World know about the super deal there will be a stampede.

Possibly, the only better set-up is a single DCOE but the manifolds for that are really hard to find.

Cool

Oops! Didn't know they were that popular. If I had the $ I'd snatch them up. But, since I just spent my allowance for a short block, I guess I'll have to wait. Maybe Santa will bring me some for xmas!!

dont worry ron, i still got mine and prolly will for awhile...seems like not many people like to drop that money on the carbs and everything...only difference with mine is the longer intakes and i have the air horns for them and jetted for a 2.0

They got sold in a heart beat. Maybe Santa bought them to give to some lucky kid. Unfortunately, it's not me. Guess I'll have to keep my eyes open.

Yeah!

New Webers are about $400 apiece and the manifolds can go for up to $300 .. for used ones .... do the math!

Just found this pair of NEW 40mm DCOMs here .. originally for an Alfa Romeo "75 TwinSpark" $US525 for the pair .. and I thought they were a bargain!

Found them on the local, New Zealand "TradeMe" buy and sell web site - could not believe my eyes as I have seen them on eBay.UK for nearly GBP500

$NZ850 = $US525 ... today - plus FREE Postage!

GBP500 = $NZ 1,425 .. today - Plus Postage would have been another GBP50
.. around $US1,000

So I got them locally for 1/2rd the price .. and delivered too.

Yeh - Haw! That is what Credit Cards are for ...

The big difference is that they were brand new never used carbs with stacks inside air cleaners. Great deal.

Especially the short one (Steinmetz, ao.) that'll fit a GT without heater box mods!

stay away from DCOM carbs. Stay away from any DCOE that has high number after DCOE like higher than 70, except 149, 151, 152

on the DCOM carburetors, there are a lot of parts that are not available for replacement or repair in North America. parts such as pump jets, are different as well the carbs do not use pump exhaust valves. The venturies are different as well. The other big thing is that these carbs have diaphragm pumps. Something that is not the best thing for an all out performance carburetor IMHO. Not many companies have repair kits either, however we do.

On the higher number DCOE carbs, you have to do a lot of extra tuning as these carburetors were designed as pollution control carburetors. They have emulsion tubes and idle jets that are a lot different that what North American suppliers have
