Unanswered: Can anyone tell me what this is?

I've seen them before but I can not locate information about specifically what it is. It really cleans up that side of the engine bay with the airfilter like that.

Thanks!

Are you referring to the side draft carb, or the side draft intake?

That is a single side draft carburetor, I doesn't look like a weber but may be a solex or del'orto.

That is a Solex 40 DDH side draft carb and a 1971 Steinmetz side draft intake.

Looks like you have to plug the valve cover vent to use it

Like night is to day. The stock Solex (and most aftermarket Webers that are typically used to replace the dreaded SlowEx) are "progressive" two barrel down-draft carbs, as in the first throat, or the primary is used until about 3/4 throttle, THEN the secondary opens up at larger throttle settings. In the "down-draft" carb, the air flows "down" through the throats and then makes a right angle turn into the intake manifold, where it turns again to enter the intake valves.

The picture above is a "SSD", better known as a Single Side Draft set up. It uses a two barrel carb, but that is the only similarity. Both throats operate simultaneously. The air direction is a "straight shot" at the valves. Most common are the Weber DCOE's and DCOM's, but the Solex and Dell'Orto are also highly thought of.

A higher performance set up is the "DSD" as in Dual Side Draft. Dual two bbl carbs, so each cylinder gets it's own throat. Better at higher rpm, but more difficult to tune for low and mid-range. Also takes up more room, so requires extensive modification of the heater box area (at least with the non-shorty manifolds) in the GT.

Time for you to do a bit of reading and research, as there are lots of good threads with lots of good photos on the site of all of these set ups. What kind of carb does your GT have?

Where did you get the linkage with the return spring? I've only found a couple of places to source that item. With the Solex, does the cable pull up as on the Webers? That is one of the stumbling blocks I have not been able to figure out. The linkage from here UNIVERSAL CABLE KIT is one thought that came to mind as well as here, Weber Carburetors, Conversion Kits - Pierce Manifolds Inc.
Thanks, Jarrell

I discovered the carburetor of the NSU / Volkswagen K70. The carburetor was there used in series from 1970 to Juli 1972. It is already equipped with a cable pull up linkage. You can attach a cable very easy.

I am quite fond of the "MacGyver" method and will probably use that.

opelgtworld,

I am in the process of putting the exact same set-up on my GT. 40DDH from a K70 on an Irmscher short SSD manifold.

I would appreciate any photos you have of this set-up from the linkage to the vacuum tubes etc. I thought was on my own! Send pictures!

Corey
