Unanswered: 2L w/40DCOEs won't start

I bought a Kadett with twin 40DCOEs which had sat for several years and am trying to get it to start. It has good gas in the tank and a new electric fuel pump. I took the carb covers off, took the fuel out of the bowls, and then cranked the engine over and made sure that the floats are working and the bowls refill with fuel. If I squirt a little fuel into the horns the engine will start and run for a few seconds and then die. Seems like the jets won't meter fuel for idling or throttle.

I'm a beginner with this style of carb so any quick help would be great. Eventually I plan to rebuild the carbs I just want to get it so that I can start the engine and move the car around, etc.

Probably either the idle jets or idle mixture needles are gummed up with crud. Happens every year to my lawnmower!

I see I'm not the only one with that problem, even with emptying the carb

I've started cars that have been standing for over 10 to 15 years, have an other person start the car while you pour drops of gas in the carb, the longest time it took to have the car running was about 35 to 40 minutes

you first should do a thorough examination of the jets. look at them up to a light, and make sure you can see thru them. Next, blow air thru the idle ports in the carb. If that does not help, you are going to have to disassemble and soak the carburetors. I would suggest Castrol Super Clean, straight up. Let them sit overnight. Then clean and rinse with hot water, blow out with air. Let dry over a heater or something like that. You might be able to probe around to see if there is any varnish build up anywhere. Good luck.
