Unanswered: DSD airbox

I was wondering if anyhow has any pics or know how of what to do to the air filters on the DSD...I was thinking about a box or something to enclose both filters and run it to the front of the car like a custom cold air intake...this would be going on a manta just to let u know...

Adam, Check out this link. http://www.twminduction.com/airbox.htm Kinda pricey for the 4 cyl, but in the discussion of the heat shield in this thread,
http://www.opelgt.com/forums/6d-exhaust-system/8433-header-heat-shield.html, Using / building an air box with the top removable for adjustments, a heat shield on the bottom of it to keep the carb air cool, a air hose to the front of the Manta to the right inside headlight, I think is workable.
Someone here on the board has run their air intake on their Manta/Ascona this way and has a picture posted. I just can't remember who. Just armchair thinking. Jarrell

Hi Adam,

I use the TWM cold air box on my 2.4 Manta. The quality is excellent and the design is efficient and compact. It is a bit pricey but, you do get what you pay for. I removed my right side high beam headlamp and made a set up to draw cold air in from there. I replaced the headlamp with stainless steel screening and attached the filter directly to the back of the headlamp bucket. I have attached a couple of photos to give you a better idea. I hope it helps.

Duane

WOW...great pics...i wonder if i would look even better to do the same to the other side and just have the air go into the engine compartment...then replace both outer lights with one that has the low and hi beam in it...

That is strictly a matter of personal preference. Be sure to check your states inspection laws prior to making any decisions though. Most states are pretty tight on lighting regulations. My car is not technically legal for street use here in Pennsylvania, however, I hold a state inspection license so a few things may slip through the cracks during inspection

yeah i understand that...my dad is also able to do them and my dads best friend does them too at the chevy dealership here...so i should be alright with it...i mean i got it inspected with no bumpers on it and its a 74 which would have the crash test regulations on it...and it went through...

Duane, do you think that there's enough room with the TWM cold air box to fit in a Gt? I have the short Irmesher (sp) intakes. Or should I try what I posted in post 2? Thanks, Jarrell

Hi Jarrell,
I can't say for sure if it would fit in a GT as I'm not much of a GT guy. I would be happy to take some measurements of my box and provide them to you. That way you could check your car and manifold set up to be sure. Your second option is certainly doable, however, it would be much more involved to fabricate, possibly cumbersome to work around while tuning and most definitely heavier. Let me know if you need measurements.

Thanks Duane, I'll probably take you up on the offer around spring. By that time the engine should be done and everything ready for installation. There's a lot I have to read / learn about the setup I'm trying to do. From what I've read on the board here, there are a couple of others who are going a similar route, and others who have already done it. I must say those are some awesome pictures of your engine. Very unlikly Duane's setup will fit in the GT. It's very tight at the lead carb. You would have to build a custom box (or find a smaller box) to mold around the contours of the GT engine compartment. And this is with the heater box cut out too. Not to say that it's impossible, just unlikly from seeing the photos.

I have a photo on one of the forums (http://www.opelgt.com/forums/showthr...cowl+induction) of my engine bay with a prototype "airdam" that utilizes the engine compartment itself as the box and the hood as the lid of the box. The only problem with this design is the lack of negative pressure to force air thru a filter if you wanted to add one at the opening like Duane has.

Please post a few pictures, I'm interested in how you did it and kept the heater intact.I plan on adding the twins when the time is right.
Thanks,

Thanks, I'd be interested in the pictures, as with the setup I have, I'm supposed to not have to mess with the heater box at all. It will be a while before the engine is in the car. But it will get there. Jarrell

Hey soybean,
What kind of manifolds do you plan on putting in?? If they can go in without tweaking the heater box, I very VERY interested in finding a set. I really want the twins but the only hesitation I have is the destruction involved, cuz I really dont want to make drastic changes to the originality of the car!! Yeah, twins arent excactly original, but I plan on keeping the mods to a point where if need be, the car could be put back together the way it came.

The setup I purchased was a whole package that had the short Irmscher intakes, thermostat and dual 40DCOEs. The person I purchased them from said they came from Gabriel (alfa1750 on E-Bay). They are shorter than the Cannons. Check his E-Bay site out. I thought there was a link here to his website, just can't find it right now. Jarrell

Ok Jarrell, now I'm curious. Gabriele almost never sells OEs but used to sell alot of OMs. I wonder where this set came from. I know of 4 in the last 2 years. Oregon, Cali, Texas and Kansas. I watch twin sets like a hawk. Tell me the state and I'll tell you more. One set was overseas but a possibility too.

Oh and have a look for Weiand air filters, they fit nicely on the Irmshers and require almost no mods.

Nobody, this setup was purchased from a member on the board from the west coast, want to say Washington State, who put them up for sale on a Sat night Aug 20th, and I found them on a Sunday morn about 6 Am and got them. GtJim was on the board and I asked his opinion. You hadn't gotten up yet as I wanted your opinion on them too. I don't want to post his name on the board out of courtesy, but Opeldean wrote and told me it was a good purchase to have gotten, so he knew about them somehow. They weren't on there long. The ad said they were set up for the Gt with the short intakes so the heater box wouldn't have to be cut. Jetting was already done, so basically it was a bolt on and go. I won't actually know that until the engine is actually in the car. I knew there weren't that many sets like this in the U.S and I really wanted them badly for this next engine build.
I'll post some pictures when I get back this evening from plowing. They are calling for rain Sun here and I really want to get this field done badly. One more rain and I'm out of the fields until around March.
There's a set of Weiand air filters on Ebay or were, I think they went off last night. My concern is getting cold air to them instead of the hot engine air. That's why I was examining the heat shield possibility as well. I remembered Conneros cold air intake and your cowl induction, just couldn't find pictures of yours.
I'll post pictures of the thermostat housing as it is sideways compared to what Opeldean has on his. Jarrell

I would prefer the actual housing but I do remember you making an adapter. So if the real thing can't be located I guess that would be my next step.

Thanks,

Have a look at OpelDeans avatar. It can be done. Dean's been driving his around for a while with no problems. I think it was like 60 bucks to have it done to fit with short Irmshers. Ya I remember how but he has the pics.

You will need to send them cash in an envelope (unless they have changed their overseas payment method).

Probably a box with cash and a body part or two.

Thanks, I'll check. Gil was supposed to try to find me one but I never followed up on it. I need to do that before I look too far.

Thanks again,

Honest to God, you can mod an existing one to fit. A bit of Tig work is all it takes after a cut or two. I can make a few more if the need arises.

Deans was patterned after a stock Irmsher one and all it takes is moving the outer housing towards the fan a bit.

I paid 60 0r so to get it welded is all. If you have access to a tig then the price is alot less.

I fitted it to a head with Irmshers on it so ya I have a vague idea. Keep it simple

Here's a couple of pictures of the setup I have. The 2nd picture has a better shot of the thermostat. It sits sideways, compared to the normal way the housing sets. I didn't get a good shot of the short intakes as it was dark when I got in tonight. This is only the second time I've unwrapped them. Jarrell
