We got the 4 door model Ascona A back in 1971. That was the only year here in the US. My sister had one. Interesting model. I see yours has what looks like a 1.2? We had 1.9 here. Check the usual areas, the battery box, and the frame rail/jack point at the driver's side for rust. If not, start your restoration there by cleaning the battery box throughly, then use a product called POR-15, then you can leave it, or go one step further, by coating the battery box area with something we call "rhino liner" for pickup trucks. Then you'll never have to worry about the battery box again.

So survival of the '72 and '73's must be the lowest of all the Asconas over here. I've never seen a breakdown of different 1900 model sales. Here are a couple of pages out of the 1973 Buick Opel USA sales brochure:

Part of the reason the 4-door Ascona was dropped from the US lineup (besides slow sales) was that for 1974 the car would have to be re-certified as a 'separate model' in crash testing. The chassis was different enough from the 2-door models to require a total re-engineering. Not cost effective for the amount sold.

Getting ANY "older" Opel for 70 Euro is a great deal. The 4-door version is rare, even for Europe. It was manufactured from December 1970 until March of 1975.

There are books available " How to restore a car" you can find from internet
for general info. Also you need an opel manual. Anthony Drosos [alpharm@otenet.gr] from Athens Greece or Manta Doctor from Germany have lots of parts for Asconas. Pete
