Unanswered: What is this for?
What is the purpose of the bracket underneath the lip of the fender in the battery box area...it is on the opposite fender also?

Look at the hood. There are 'hooks' on the hood that coincide with these bolted-on brackets. This prevents the hood from coming through the windshield in a frontal collision. It is VERY effective, I've seen a Manta hit so hard that the engine ended up under the cockpit, and the grill was flush with the firewall. And the hood was bent perfectly in two, standing up vertically. Did its' job well!
