Unanswered: Ascona Tail lights

Anyone done any upgrades to the tail light sockets on the Asconas? I've had to change a lamp a couple times this year and as the sockets don't come out without disassembling the entire unit it turns out to be many times more work than need be. The original socket/reflector housing has a pretty mediocre ground so I have installed common ground wire to each socket. That has helped a lot, but additionally, the rubber lens seals take a beating with the removal and I doubt they are that easy to find anymore.
I like keeping the car pretty original, but servicing the tail lights is a pain. I was thinking it needn't be complex to switch out the bulb sockets for a more up to date plug in type. Anyone had any experience along those lines?

I haven't done it yet, but I was going to convert a set of them to accept LED lamps, and make them removeable from within the trunk.
