I just recieved a phone call telling me that the car is fully primered and can be picked up tomorrow. I'll be bringing it home after work tomorrow afternoon and will post photos tomorrow night.

As promised, here are some photos of the car as I got it back from the body shop. They really did a great job of getting full coverage in all of the nooks and crannies, in the corners and on all sides of the roll cage tubing. Even the front suspension and underside of the car look great. Now the work begins.

I got to work on the Ascona for a bit on Sunday and made some pretty good progress. Rick (opelgtguy) joined me in the afternoon and we double teamed it for several hours. I got both rocker panels cut out, removed the front clip, cut the steering support out and cut out part of the battery box and a few small patch areas. Rick tried his hand with the plasma cutter and removed the inner tail lamp housings. He did a great job and seemed to really enjoy it. I'll be modifying the front clip so that it can be easily removed and installed with bolts rather than spot welds. This will allow easy replacement in the event of an "incident" and it will also make engine removal and installation much easier as the engine can just be slipped right out the front instead of going up and over the front panel. I will remove the outer collapsible part of the steering column and just leave the shaft which will be mounted to the dash bar of the roll cage with a hiem joint for support. I'll need to order the Stienmetz quarter panel flares soon so I can start laying out the panels for cutting.
Here's some pics for you. Duane |
