Question Unanswered: Adhesive for SportWagon side pop-put windows

Today I opened one of my popout windows and it fell off the front two hinges. Luckily the popout handle in the rear is actuallly bolted thru the glass so it didnt fall and break. Its not the first time either.

The front hinges seem to have been glued to the glass with a putty or two sided tape. I have tried several two sided tapes, including an industrial version, but none seem to be able to take the weather, eventually coming loose from heat/cold (I think)

Does anyone have any idea what to use to re-attach these?

Thanks

I used to glue them back in place with epoxy adhesive such as Marine-Tex, but eventually they would break again. So next I removed the window and masked off the entire window except for the area to be glued, and glass-beaded it for more adhesion and re-glued it...this worked longer but eventually they broke again!

My 'final' solution was to weld a thin stainless bracket to the back-side of the OEM 'hinge', which therefore encapsulates the glass from both sides. I then glue this in place using the aforementioned technique and so far (knock on wood), none of them have broken away. Keep in mind I tend to run horrendously stiff springs/shocks/bushings compared to stock, so I probably put 10 years worth of abuse into about a 1 year timeframe.

HTH,
Bob

ascona side glass

Did you have any phots of the bracket? I assume you glass-beaded both sides and used adhesive on both sides. Larry Klein has good luck with JB weld. Are yours still holding Larry

side windows

I work at a GM dealer & we use an epoxy to hold glass to window
regulators & pop-out windows . This is a two part epoxy & is in a
mixing packet ( 3M product ) & cost is app. 6 to 10 $ . Drying time is
5min. I remove pivots & glue then to glass & reinstall ( 1 to 2 hours )
hope this helps . guyopel

Thanks!

I did some general searching and found the 3M product and it sounds like the right thing.

I didn't make a photo of the 'hinge' or 'bracket' but it does not attach to the edge of the glass and has only one side (the outside). These are essentially flat pieces of stainless that is glued to the surface of the glass - on the outside (not a very theft proof approach).

One end hangs off the glass and, when the window is mounted, this end is shoved into a tight rubber grommet in the window frame. The hinge is not articulated.

Any thoughts on the glue that is used to attach rear view mirrors to the windshield?
