Ascona/manta speedo question

I am replacing my speedometer(W=1054) in my 74 Ascona Sportwagon, and I have a curious question. All of my speedometers in the past have a small square hole at the top of the face. My new(to me) speedometer has a button covering this hole. Anyone know what this hole was for? Was it for some european application of a light of some sort? The answer will not change the world, but I have been wondering for some time.
thanks,
Gerry

it could have been a place for a light or some one put one there to change the odometer reading would be my guess

Hole at the top.

All of the units you had before probably had that plug fall out of them. The plug ties into the frame of the speedometer below. Probably for a trip odometer or something else on the European models.
