searching for info

Is there a secret for searching the forums and threads? I never have any luck. I printed out one page of a thread and now cant find it. I type in words from the page i printed out and it says nothing found. It was the thread that Charles Goin wrote about the replacement valve cover hoses from using the "HELP" products. This is why people ask the same questions over and over...we cant find the threads.

I totally agree!! The search function leaves a lot to be desired. If I search using one or two words, I get lots of threads that are not related at all to what I am looking for. When I ask a question, some members always respond by saying use the search function. I always use the search first, but most times it is completely useless.

Here is the thread I found it by going to GoinManta on the members list, and then viewed all threads started by GoinManta, it was on the first page

So the search engine is useless. Ive even type in words specific to what Charles wrote, such as "Dorman." Up at the top of the page it shows the thread history. It says its in group 6-engine. Then says 6E-tune up. But it is nowhere to be found.

I use the google search engine for the site. Like any other search though, you have to have a good search string. I do find myself doing multiple searches and reading a lot of threads in an attempt answer my question b/4 asking it again. I know this doesn't help but I feel your pain

By the way, I missed that thread. That looks like a neat and inexpensive solution!!! I'll be stopping at Advanced Auto and Pep Boys tomorrow.

That thread title did not do much for search engine recognition. I'm going to "rebuild" the search engine index and optomize that database at the same time. We'll see if it makes a difference.

the search engine has always been a difficult tool to use in any forum as it is stupid and brilliant at the same time

a long question will get a million answers or non at all , a short 1 or 2 word question will get 3 million or no answers

but after a while you start to learn how to phrase the questions and results will start to come

try going to the forum for the subject you have , say engine swaps and searching for an answer in that forum (if its a swap question ) then in the near top right there's a "search forum" button i found this helps a lot as it narrows the search parameters down to the subject better

Not sure of you have done this already yet Gary but FYI a feature is now working for me that never worked before - the "search this thread" tool. It used to always return an empty list for me and now it works.
