Question Opel Battery

I see the Opel manual for the 1973 GT lists a Delco General 12 volt 44 amp hour original equipment. The replacement battery listed is a Delco Energizer Y55. According to to my local supplier this number no longer exists. Does anyone know the required cranking amps for a safe replacement battery "500?"

Cca350

Anything between 350 and 500 Cold Cranking Amps will do the job - the colder (ie: further North) its, the higher the numbers!

Many people use a 'gel' battery to minimise the acid damage to the battery holder/belly pan.

Just get a good Heavy Duty battery that fits the battery holder!

I think a better idea would be to measure the distance between the radiator support and body, between the hood hinge supports, to see how wide it is, then get a battery that will slide down between the two.

Were I going to put a battery in a GT ever again, it would be one of these, made for a Miata:
http://store.miataparts.org/wessealbat.html

They're a fully sealed battery, 350 or so CCA, and absolutely tiny. Easy drop in, no more rust, only 25 pounds, what's not to love? They're also AGM batteries, which have been lasting up to 10 years under normal use in Miatas.
