Question Unanswered: 5 speed transmission

I am thinking of rebuilding my 1.9l engine in a 1972 opel gt for performance and I was wondering if i will need to upgrade to a 5 speed to get those ponies to the pavement? If so what is the cheapest was to go about putting a 5 speed into a gt and is it posible to find a used one?

5-speed alternatives

The usual way to fit a 5-speed is to get a later model Manta B Getrag gearbox which bolts up with a few modifications.
The use of a S10 T-5 is also possible - just search the site for "Getrag" or "5-speed gearbox" or "T-5 gearbox" and lots of info is available in old posts.
It is also possible to fit Toyota Celica 5-speed boxes.
Nothing real cheap though!
They do help highway performance considerbly but you also need to do the S-10 clutch conversion.
Have a look here: Opel GT Source --- Welcome They sell used 5-speed Getrag Kits and gearboxes

If you go the toyota gearbox route, which, would probably require alot of modifications, I suggest 2 trannys that you would be happy with. But you will need to do research to be sure you can get them to fit. Both of these trannys came with the toyota supra mk3. the w-58 is out of the supra nonturbo, can hold about 400hp, thats probably all you would need. The second is the r154 out of the turbo model. this tranny has been used on everything from chevy v-8s to jag v-12s, it is capable of holding over 1000hp. but due to its robustness, it is hard to come by and can be expensive. I have worked with supras alot, i know these are two proven gearboxes. alot of people fabricate adaptors to get them to fit, but like i said i have no idea what you would need to do. just a suggestion though

If you are just rebuilding your 1.9L and keeping it stock powered then the stock clutch/pressure plate setup will be fine. If you decide to beef things up a bit then you will need to beef up the clutch and P-plate. Upgrading to the S-10 P-plate will require some grinding to the Getrag 5-speed bell housing.
