Unanswered: Pontiac G5 Getrag???

Just throwing this out there.I noticed that a new model of GM or pontiac car being the G5 have 5 speed getrag transmissions & some are just normal 5 speeds.Whats the difference & could this new GM getrag be fitted to our Opel gt?What makes the getrag different, just a manufacturer or what. Thanks

Dale;
The only way most would get excited about this is if the 5-spd you're talking about is for RWD applications, but, I fear that a lot of Pontiacs are FWD and the transmissions are of a completely different design.

Getrag is a transmission manufacturer in Germany. They make a lot of transmissions for a lot of different cars and for a lot of different manufacturers. Saying "I have a Getrag transmission" is a lot like saying "I have a Borg-Warner" or "I have a Tremec" or "I have a Muncie" or "I have a Saginaw" or "I have a New-Process" or "I have a ZF." It really signifies nothing at all about the configuration of the transmission, no more than "Goodyear" signifies a particular type of tire. Sure you may run Goodyear tires on your car and your truck, but probably not the same tire in the same size.

Now when it comes to it, as a general rule Getrag makes pretty decent transmissions. Some times a car manufacturer uses that in their advertising, just like Corvette did with their "Nash 4+3" of Ford did with the "Tremec" in the Mustang. BMW specified in the literature for my MINI Cooper that the transmission was made by Getrag, and Chevy did as well back with the Fiero and Grand Am which also used Getrag transmissions.

If you are looking for the most commonly swapped 5-speed used to upgrade our Opels it is a Getrag built RWD transmission model #240. BMW used a model 242 that shares pretty much all the internals but has a different case and will not bolt up to an Opel engine. The big CIH-6 Opel cars, the Admiral, Commodore, Rekord, etc.. used an even beefier Getrag model #265, which was a transmission built with a detachable bell housing. That means, for the most part, that the Getrag 265 could be used in a lot of different cars with bell housings built by each of the auto manufacturers, and that's exactly what happened. The 265 was used in Opels, BMWs, Jaguars, and some Fords in England, and probably a bunch more I don't know about. They are relatively easy to come by, but the bell housing at a minimum would have to be an Opel one, and good luck finding that.

When you are looking around for a transmission, you need to look at more than just the manufacturer is what I guess I'm trying to type here.

thanks for the info.Stupid me,I didn't even think about front or rear wheel drive.Almost all the cars around nowadays are fwd except for some of the masdas.It was just the first time I've seen the jetrags advertise in a new domestic.Would love to get a 240 tranny for my 71 gt.It's just the 2000$ price tag that's slowing me down.That's the tranny & new clutch parts from OGTS & of course shipping to Vancouver IS.One day but probabably not this year

5spd trans.

I am looking for a five speed overdrive transmission to fit in the 1971 opel gt that I am rebuilding. It is going to be the stock 1900 cc engine. What does the getrag transmissions come out of to fit the opel gt. Possible part numbers and vechical applications or any info would be a great help. A direct bolt up would be great. Thanks

Exclamation $$$$

Now if you don't mind spending between $3.5k to $6k for a 5 speed with or with or with out OD or a 6 speed transmission for your Opel which would be a bolt up via custom adaptor included in the price, also you have the option of picking your own gear ratios, and would be rated at a minimum of 250 HP if I recall correctly, I can't find the book at the moment ( I think it is in the house).
So if money is not an issue then PM me and I will get you the information, these are a perfomance rated transmissions, they are brand new not used as the majority of the Getrags are even if rebuilt.

I wouldn't mind getting that information. When I get around to the supercharger my 2.4 I'll certainly need something beefier than a getrag 240!
