Unanswered: what is the model of that getrag?

Since everyone seem to be so hospitable I wonder if I could troubel everyone with another question? I heard you have to use a foreign getrag and get it shipped over, if so what is the model of that getrag, I also heard that it is possible to use a getrag 240, is that true? Basically I want to know what all my options for 5 speed conversion donors are.

Thanks, DacMan

The GETRAG 240 (with correct of parts for a conversion) is a bolt-on to an Opel engine. It feels "right" in terms of where the shifter throw is located, and is complementary to the weight balance of the car (for better handling). Other Opel 5-speed transmissions like the 265 have different gear ratios (not as well suited to the street). I would suggest inquiring about a complete installation package and warranty arrangements with any purchase (to avoid getting burned, like others here have).

Non-Opel 5-speed conversions, like the T-5 have been done but don't fit the original GT as well (some require a very short driveshaft, others require a relocated shifter hole closer to the parking brake handle). Their chief appeal is lower entry price, but they require some getting used to once the project is done.

The getrag 240 is from overseas. It was used starting in the early to mid-80s Opel models we did not get in the US. BMW has their own version of the 240, in which all the internals are the same as the 240 Opel uses. The bellhouse and shifter are BMW specific on the BMW version. Now using the Opel 240 trans requires modifying the shifter and the driveshaft, but, once done and done correctly, the shifter is in the stock location, and the gear ratios in the 5-spd are better suited for the Opel 1.9. As stated by Dave, there has been interest in the T-5 trans, but, it requires a bit more work than the 240, but, is available here in the US where as the 240 is not.

Lets be careful here about the T-5 there's over 300 different variations.
The one thats is the most interesting is the late 80'-early 90's S-10 2.8L with the 3.76 first gear ratio.
But if your changing out the stock diff. and trans to handle more power it might be an option. Now only if there was a little more room in the GT transmission tunnel.

Ok I see,
So just to make sure I'm correct the BMW trans will not work, and I will have to order an overseas version, is there any body that sells the trans and the conversoion parts as a kit, or do the $1250 kits not include a transmission?

Thanks Again, DacMan

We're hospitable, but we have rules, one of which is to keep threads "on topic", so I have split this off to its own thread.

If you simply want to buy an Opel Getrag 240 kit (which does come with the transmission, and can also come with everything else you need, or less if you have some of the parts or want to modify it yourself), get in touch with Opel GT Source (Opel GT Source --- Welcome) and they'll set you up. If you want to learn about some other options, such as the T-5, or converting your own Getrag 240 (bought from overseas) to fit a GT. I suggest that you read some of the 155 threads on the topic on this Clutch, Transmission and Drive-train Upgrades Forum (link is at the top of the page or go to

...and to clarify what Dave has written, the stock Getrag 240 doesn't fit the GT properly until the shifter is modified, instructions for which are available in other threads in this Forum. But a pre-modified Getrag 240 CAN be purchased from OGTS instead of having to do your own conversion. It isn't terribly hard, but requires some advanced skills and tools (at least a MIG welder, and a Plasma cutter or at least a proper body saw is recommended, and yes I have done a conversion so I know).
