Thumbs down

If you found it in a US junkyard, chances are its a BMW one...check the bolt pattern on the bellhousing...

The shifter attaching area is not like any of the 240's I have seen, so it must be a BMW version. Now the internals are the same as the Opel 240, but, the casing is different.

The 5-speed is from a BMW, and like Gene says the internals are inter-changable with the Opel Getrag case, however the input and output shafts are not inter-changable between the two. Here is a pic of a 240 Opel(GM) Getrag.

Ok this is what I can say I've learned.

1. Some late model Opels came with a getrag 5 speed trans 240/5
2. OTGS sells the getrag 240/5 either modified or unmodified.
3. The BMW or any other car that came with a Getrag 240/5 is not the same externally. Due to the integral style bellhousing.

So the only thing I am still confused about is what modifications OTGS must do to the tranny to make it work in the GT. Is it the shifter modification ?

The shifter, and the driveshaft have to be modified to work in a GT. The driveshaft part is best left up to a driveline profession in your area. I can't say for the various shops all across the US, but, here in GA, I use Doraville Driveline, and they do the modification for about $60. The shifter mod can be done by yourself, with regular handtools, but, needs to be taken to a shop (muffler shop is the quickest and easiest) to be welded.

Here are a few pics of those mods. Also rember to remove the NYLON BUSHING before starting any mods that will create heat build up and result in a mellt down and a trip to th Beamer House and they ain't cheap. First is to cut down shifter mount plate, cut shfter linkage, cut out shifter mount, cut or drill new hole for shifter mount. Then weld everthing up. sounds easy and it can be, but measurements are critical to make it all work.

mods

To cut the drive shaft down weld the yoke assembly and balance, can very even locally one place charge me $60 on my first one. Then at another driveline shop the cost was $45. But I would say if you have the yoke and drive shaft would range from the $45 to $85 for this modification.
Not of the suject but if you are running a consul A/C unit it is critical to get the shifter in the right place so you can get into 1st and 2nd and 5th and reverse without banging up your hand or the AC consul. It is just a tad off of being perpendicular to the pin hole on the ball section of the shifter and the "U" piece that connects to the shifter.

Don't forget the new mounting holes in the transmission cross and the recommended use of an auto style rubber mount.
