I assume you mean how are the gears arranged (on the shifter):
1. 3. 5. ├─┼─┤ 2. 4. R Dieter

Actually, isn't Reverse is up beside 1st (not below 5th). It's typically a pretty hard pull over to reverse from what I recall.

Nope...on the Getrag 240, Reverse is beside first gear. It has a really stiff lock spring, but not a lockout per se.

you ain't gonna believe this s**t
This story is so unbelievably incredulously stupidly #$%#$% funny, it might be hard to believe.
OK, here's the story: In 1991 (when I still lived in Germany) I bought this almost-new 2.0 16V engine out of a crashed Opel Calibra, and a Getrag 240 out of a Manta B 1.8 to fit the DOHC engine for a rear wheel drive configuration for my Kadett. It took me years of work to finish the Kadett body, and the engine and transmission never went in the Kadett. 1998, I moved to the USA, and took everything with me. Since then I'm buried even tighter in work, and work on the Kadett goes even slower. In spring of 2004, I had my engine totally overhauled. It had only around 10,000 miles on it, but it hasn't been running for the last 13 years. In summer of 04, I had my gearbox at a local transmission store for checking. They opened it up, checked bearings and so on and found everything alright. I finally put the engine and gear box in, put my shortened drive shaft in and drove around on my lot. No exhaust headers, no brakes, but lots of noise and fun. Put it in reverse and back up in the garage - no, reverse gear doesn't go in. I tried it soft, tried it hard, I hammered and I pounded, but reverse just didn't want to go in. This was a few days before I moved from North Carolina to Georgia, and I just did not have any chance to take the gear box back out and throw it in the face of the transmission shop. The gear pattern on the stick that came with the gear box was showing 1. 3. 5. ├─┼─┤ 2. 4. R Then this thread came up, and some other guys really doubt that, and wanna tell me that reverse is next to 1st gear... First I wanted to ask them to go out and check their cars, but then my own story of "reverse won't go in" came to my mind, so fortunately I kept my stupid mouth shut. Coming home, going in my shop, press the shifter hard left and up, and guess what - I can confirm now for sure where that stupid reverse is! Neuropel, Killer Texas GT, birds_of_fire, you are great, thanks a lot, you helped me to find reverse, after 15 years of owning a gear box!!! Dieter (the reversi)

When I first installed a Getrag in my GT, I didn't think reverse was working properly. I attributed it to having the linkage shortened, etc. and at first I hated it. After a week of driving it, I wouldn't have changed a thing. They're awesome transmissions. I REALLY miss driving one now.

That is a kinda neat story, and made me think. The T-5 I'm putting in Willit? has the same pattern that Dieter showed, and I did check it out before I attached the tranny to the bellhousing. I thought it was kinda cool that 5th gear is way far up and away from the Pax seat, while Reverse was down and close to it. BTW both are spring loaded to get into the gear, but both are not real strong springs, so I'll have to be careful going from 2nd to 3rd.

Yeah Jeff, and according to a very old humorous story, Lo means Leap Out, and Dr, meant Drag Race. I wonder if that gentleman got his money back on that Caddy.

Dieter I have to admit I couldn't remember the shift pattern iether, I had to go out in the shop and look in the rubber draw for the gear shifter knob for the Getrag. I haven't really driven mine alot lately. But If any one has any ideas on why I am getting the grinding when I try to go into Reverse I am all ears to suggestions, I would like to put this Getrag to use. It will go only after it is forced in but grinds as it goes in, I have torn it down at least a many times as Dieter banged his head.

Dieter;
That's ok, (i'm still trying to dry the tears from laughing so much) Sometime, I'll have to tell you the story of my Grandfather and how he "discovered" 4 door cars.

Getrag
Hi
I'm Looking to get the Getrag 5 speed. What is the RPM at 80 mph, if it's higher than 3k then it's not worth it. Driving all day in Calif at 80 mph at 4k leaves ringing in the ears. Note to Ron. call my cell can't find your number. Thanks all |

I know this is a little from the shift pattern thread here but it is still a getrag question. Is the filler hole for the fluid the large hex head plug that is on the passenger side of the tranny? And if it is what size is it and is there an easy way to get it out? Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't fine it with a search.

And I would love to hear the answer to the question that Audi poses. Just how much benifit is there having the 5 speed when you get on the highway? I would love to cruise at 80MPH @ 2500rpm!

I don't know the exact ratio of the Getrag, but I think somewhere in the .80:1 range in 5th gear. So for a quick and dirty guesstimation multiply the RPM at a given speed by .8 and you'll be close to what RPM the speed would be with a 5-speed. Using John's (Audi5000) example of 80 MPH at 4K it works out like this: 4000 X .8 = 3200 RPM. HTH.

Thanx Otto, I must have been thinking about my model boat engine RPM, but at least now we know the final (5th gear) ratio is .804:1, so using the formula of 80 MPH at 4000 RPM we come up with 4000 X .804 = 3216 RPM at 80 MPH with a Getrag 240 5-speed.

the first thing you will notice about the getrag is the interior noise of your gt will drop dramaticaly. the stock tranny is amazingly loud, the getrag will bring it down to bmw sound levels. i was pleasently suprised. it is also very smooth. the stock tranny will seem so sloppy afterwards. it is so worth the switch.
