Engine Idea: 4G63t motor in a GT

I'm not sure why anyone has not done this, but why not stick a 4G63t motor in a GT? It's a good power plant and is easy to get power out of, and on top of that it's cheap to build and easy to work with. Another plus is that you can bolt up any tranny to it.

That is my plan for my opel. But I was just wondering why ya'll put those eco-tech motors from GM and V6's in there? I've got nothing against GM. But the 4G63t looks like a better idea to me. It's not that heavy of a motor and you can stoke it to a 2.3 or 2.4L, and some have taken it up to 2.7L.

My DSM is a turbo AWD, it produces 302hp/with 283ft/p on the stock turbo, with the 2.3L motors and a few other free mods, as well it gets 26mpg. Those are the base line for my thoughts. Anybody got some feedback for me?

I'm doing this for discussion I just want some of you older more exp. guys with the GT ideas on the matter.

sounds like a cool idea. and it can be mated to the mitsu truck trans since the bell housing mates up. the only issue may be clearancefor the intake mani and the turbo. the brake master is low in the engine bay and takes up some of the room where you would usually have a manifold sitting. IF you had some measurments of the 4g63 in 3-5 diffrent places and make a templte you can see hou much room you would need.


personally i was looking into a miata 1.8 swap for my kadett so that i can have a modern drive line and still be able to keep close to the stock weight. im not a big fan of cutting my engine compartment up just to fit a turbo.

potholessuck is right on the money with the truck trans. there have been a few guys that have done this swap one in particular on the galantvr4.org board that put a 4g motor in a e30 bmw. I would recommend a real ecu though, when I had my VR4 the autronic ecu was by far the best mod I did. I managed 455 whp on 100 octane race fuel and with the 92 map I was in the high 300's, and that was with an unported evo 3 turbo. I've often wondered why it's not a more popluar engine swap due to the fact that you can make 300 wheel by looking at them sideways.

A few people have talked about installing 4G63's over the years, but so far no one has actually done it...or if they have, they haven't returned to the forums with their results yet.

I concur it's a strong engine, and can make a lot of power on the cheap, especially the later EVO engines (bigger turbo and MIVEC), but that's a bit pricey! I've seen an EVO 9 make over 380 whp with the stock turbo and stock engine management (tuned with OpenECU), and nothing more than a 3" turbo-back exhaust and a set of 270 degree Cosworth cams. Potent engine, and that's tuned on pump gas @ 26 psi and run in road racing...it's even run a three hour enduro at VIR, so it's no trailer queen!

The reason for Ecotec talk and GM 60 degree V6's?
Since Opel is GM, a lot of folks like to keep it GM. And specifically, the Ecotec is a joint venture between GM USA and GM Germany (Opel), so in fact you would be installing a new 'Opel' engine if you went that route.

The other reason is once you step up to a LOT more power than stock, you have to re-engineer the entire driveline, brakes, and suspension. The car simply can't handle it, a lot of stuff will break, and the car will be dangerous to drive (fast). But going from 75 hp to 150 hp is not a huge deal, relatively speaking.

Anyone succesfully installed a DSM engine in a GT?

So has anyone installed a Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo 4G63 Motor on a GT?

I have seen it discussed but nothing concrete.

THese are 2.0 Turbo 4 Cyl Engines I have my Eclipse GST at around 350 hp with mere bolt ons. I'm wondering why it's not a more popular swap...

Excellent block, tons of aftermarket parts (unlike our GT's engine ) , small size (only a 2.0) As far as clearance for the turbo I have seen some people relocate the turbo as needed or why not go N/A? Still plenty for a GT...
