Unanswered: Opel Diesel into Chevy s10???
I have a 94’ Chevy S10, 4.3 V6, 2wd manual. It is mechanically sound and appears to have many more miles left in it. It is no longer my primary vehicle and I have free time so I would like to swap the engine. I would like to increase the torque as well as the mpg. I really want to have diesel engine in the small truck. I am considering the Olds 5.7 L diesel, but these motors are riddled with mechanical failures, heavy and obsolete. I see a lot of potential in some of the new small Opel diesels such as the 1.9CDTi, 1.7CDTi, and possibly the large 3.0CDti. I need some guidance because I know nothing about Opel technology. Would this swap be more trouble than it is worth? Is there any one who has attempted to place Opel engines in American GM vehicles? |

Each swap of any kind has it's own troubles/modifications. Some are easier, most are difficult, but, since a lot of Opel engineered stuff is making it's way into various car manufacturers, and especially in the GM family, it might be fairly easy to do such a swap. My question is where are you going to get a Opel diesel? I know of only gas motors, and those were 1.1, 1.5, and 1.9

It couldn't be too tough.
A 412 in an S-10 is lots more fun to drive, though! Apparently Opel engines have been put in Ford Rangers, believe it or not. The rules at a racetrack website somebody sent me to once mentioned it was OK to do that, so it must have been done at least once. The Olds 350 diesel isn't worth having. An Isuzu might be the way to go. Look for them in the one-ton cabover trucks.

I think your best bet would be a Cummins 4BT swap. This is not the monster 6 cylinder (6BT) in the Dodge trucks, it's a 4 cylinder version often found in bread trucks, etc.
Same awesome reliability and design. Best of all, there are LOTS of people doing similar swaps so that companies are now making adapters available for common transmissions (GM trannies in particular). Have a look at www.4btswaps.com and start reading! You'll find a wealth of information. Todd K.
