For $35,000, you just MAKE it fit!

Nice engine though!

O.K. that's a 4.3L 45 degree engine, won't quite fit too easily in Willit? without some real serious wiper well mods and maybe some fender sheetmetal removal. Besides, I'm close to the max the drivetrain can take anyway. But it sure does look good.

A Twin Turbo Buick V6 Engine By TA Performance - Hot Rod Magazine

I'm not gonna do it...but just imagine. Corvette killer!
Back in 1983,some of you may recall Buick had the honor of being picked to be the pacecar at Indianapolis 500.

I had the great fortune to be a part of the group that built that car for the race.
This was the first time the now rare "Stage 2" engine block was showcased to the public.

The engine was an iron block 4.1 four bolt main, twin turbo screamer, living in a convertible Riviera.

To get back from my reminiscing, your statement about a "Corvette killer",reminded me about a bumper sticker that was originated back at that time.

This bumper sticker displayed the Buick turbo symbol and stated,"We brake for Corvettes". Chevrolet didnt find these too humorous...because it was true!

That would so fit in a Kadett, Manta or Ascona; but sadly not in the GT.

Making it fit is not the issue. If you have $35,000 to spend on an engine chances are you have the ingenuity to make it fit or can afford to pay someone who does. Just remember to budget in redoing everything behind the motor to hold up to all that power: clutch, transmission, driveshaft, rear axle, differential, suspension, brakes, etc. You get the idea. My friend John Lane and I learned this firsthand when we built his turbo V6 Volvo rally with 600 hp and dynoed at 504 ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheels. Here's a little photo gallery that describes the metamorphosis:

Here's another that shows the Ford Powerstoke intercooler upgrade:

been there....

Ron:
That is actually a custom made variation of the 231 90 degree V-6 just like the one in my car. Only difference is the better block and heads. To stick this inside the GT compartment will require massive changes since the width at the front of the engine is approx 30". Motor mounts are OK since the mounting points are located 16 inches appart and the frame rails are 20".

I saw yesterday a 1972 TVR 2500M with a 500cu Cadilac engine, twin turbos feeding a cragar supercharger. It went to the dyno and obtained a ridiculus 965HP at the rear wheels.

Not bad for $132,000 and three years work.

JB, one of these days I'm gonna get the 45 and 90 degree straight in my head. I noted they had two types of that engine, centered and off center rod throws. I understand what they mean but can't see in my minds eye how an off center would work. 30" wide in the front of the engine wouldn't be too bad, it's the width of the top at the rear that would take some serious sheetmetal work. At least the exhaust comes forward. That Caddy motor you referred to reminds me of a firend of mine that had a diesel rig with a dual turbo V-6 and a blower, he got some serious power with that. I think he said it cost him $125K about 30 years ago. $132K and 3 years? Well at least I beat him on the cost, Willit? was cheaper there, but more than twice the time.

Ron remember this type of engine came in both odd and even fire. The centered unit (odd fire) has two pistons per journal and the uncentered (even fire) has individual journals per piston. I have an even fire engine on mine which is more streetable when modified.

The 30 inches I was talking about would cover almost all of the area on the radiator support. Considering the radiator side mounts are at 17.35" approx., this means the brake rod, steering and most of the foot well would have to go. Yes to have this setup would be very cool however sometimes cool is not practical.

JB, I think I'll stay with what I've got, thank you. My one man operation couldn't handle anymore down time, let alone my credit card. Although it is an interesting mod, I don't think I'll need any mor HP or torque for a long time. Even now I've got to be careful how fast I let out the clutch, I don't want to end up changing the inner torque tube shaft, or the differential for a long time.

Twinturboopel

The guy racing that twin turbo buick engine came to my shop the other day, with some Opel parts. He is a hard up Buick guy and still races a GT in Ohio. I believe his user name is TwinturboOpel

I love the sound of the turbo’s spool up. It reminds me of the tractor pulls at the State Fair when the Unlimited Class of tractors would come out and pull. Lots of sound, lots of smoke and lots of testosterone!!
