That really depends on how you drive. Some have said that you can kill the rearend with a stock engine if you drive it hard enough. I am in the process of this swap and I plan on using the rear end but then again I won't be driving it that hard.
If you want to know the price of the shortblock I suggest that you shoot OGTS an email. I am sure they would be happy to tell you how much it is.

2.4 short block
A couple of months ago, Opels Unlimited offered me a 2.4L short block that had just come in for $1600. Good luck getting in touch with them.
I'd go for a 2.2L instead. Relatively speaking, they're easier to get, a lot cheaper, and you probably could get away without replacing/upgrading half the car to handle the power and extra heat a 2.4 makes. That's assuming that you're not planning on driving it real hard. I'm no expert though and am only going by what OGTS and others on this site have told me.

Just remember, none of the CIH engines are particularly high HP in stock form. It's the torque that kills driveline parts anyway.
2.0E: 110 PS (108.49 hp @ flywheel) 2.2E: 115 PS (113.42 hp @ flywheel) 2.4E: 128 PS (126.24 hp @ flywheel) As you can see, not too big of a spread from a 2.0 to a 2.4. But the 2.4 has loads more torque down low. If you plan on modifying the engine with headwork, bigger cam, induction/exhaust improvements....then a lot more power is possible, and the rest of the driveline will start to show its' shortcomings. But if the engine's are largely stock, I wouldn't worry too much. Bob
