Unanswered: Opel Rekord engine replacement?
Im tired of my old, oil spitting 1900 and thinking about replacing it with a 2.2 or 2.4 l. Or maybe a commodore 81, 2.5l 6 piston, if that could fit? how does that engine fit with the automatic trans? any problems with the flywheel or is it just bolt on? Have changed a couple of 1900s before, but never on an automatic. Very thankful for any tips or knowledge on this before i start ripping it apart! Technically speaking just about anything could be made to fit…
The 2.4 is what I am in the process of swapping into my GT. It is a pretty straightforward change as almost everything is bolt in minus the EFI equipment. The automatic tranny should be plenty strong enough for the 2.4. Just try to get the Omega 2.4i engine instead of the later frontera 2.4 otherwise you'll have to swap the flywheel out.

Welkom here Jakob
The 6 in line wil fit after you place the radiator more to the front, see if you can find any photo's of a Commodore. The 4 in line engines are bolt-in. And we like photo's lots of photo's

Jakob,
4 cylinder CIHs that will fit: All (1.9, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, or any other CIH bored out up to 2.7 by any of the known engine tuners). These are bolt-on. 6 cylinder CIHs and DOHCs that will fit: All (2.2, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.0-24V). For these you need either the Getrag 240 or Getrag 265, or whatever else they came with where you are taking them out (Opel 5-speed gearboxes or automatic transmissions out of Monza, Senator, Omega A). These are close-to-bolt-on. Everything you need is available to buy (use Commodore parts, and parts from the engine donor car). 4 cylinder DOHCs that will fit: 2.0-16V or 2.0-16V turbocharged, with Getrag 240 gearbox out of a Manta B 1.8 or Rekord E 1.8, with some other modifications. You decide how much you want to spend for having fun, and then decide for yourself. Enjoy! Dieter

thanks for all the info!
Think i go for a 2.2 or 2.4 CIH. Will see what I can get my hands on. How about the 2.4 l, is it better to go with the Fuel injection or to fit a 2.2 cylinder head with carburetor? got a 2,2 and a 2.4 L cylinderhead lying in the garage. wanna beat out as much cheap horses as possible ![]() Will post some pictures when i can find my camera ![]() Thanks in advance

I would tend to use the 2.2 head, as they make better torque thanks to the smaller exhaust ports, even on bigger engines. With a split-profile cam favoring exhaust flow (the only Opel CIH head that needs it!), the 2.2 will run very well.
